#10: Humans Made Bimini Road

Also in:

Did Humans Move To Earth From Another Planet? | Unveiled

Found in the Bahamas is North Bimini Island, and found near this island is the Bimini Road. Extending a half-mile under the clear water, this “road” is composed entirely of large limestone blocks. The general consensus is that it’s a natural formation of beachrock, but some aren’t convinced. After all, who cares about boring old beachrock? Owing to its distinct features and the strange arrangement of the stones, certain folks are convinced that Bimini Road is an artificial structure made by ancient humans. Some of the most famous proponents of this theory are scuba diving pioneer Robert F. Marx and Graham Hancock, the controversial writer behind Netflix’s “Ancient Apocalypse.”

#9: NATO Was Behind the Swedish Submarine Hunts

Also in:

Top 10 Fascinating Facts About NATO

The Cold War was a time of incredible tension, which is notably personified through the Swedish submarine hunts of the 1980s. It all really began on October 27, 1981, when a Soviet submarine crossed into Swedish waters. The country’s military responded aggressively, and this incident resulted in greatly heightened tension and paranoia. In the years that followed, Sweden continuously attacked what they believed to be Soviet submarines hiding in their coastal waters. But to this day, Russia denies involvement. A Swedish research professor and conspiracist named Ola Tunander is on their side, arguing that NATO was behind the sub intrusions via some kind of covert operation. Paranoia and doubt, a perfect encapsulation of the time.

#8: Bermeja Was Destroyed by the American Government

Phantom islands are an endlessly fascinating subject. The image of a landmass previously thought to exist disappearing raises tantalizing questions and really gets those imaginative juices flowing. Enter Bermeja, an island off the Yucatán peninsula that was first mentioned by a Spanish cartographer back in 1539. It appeared on many subsequent maps throughout the centuries, but no island is found in the area. Furthermore, surveys conducted in 1997 and 2009 found no evidence of it. Its initial identification is likely due to a mistake or natural phenomena. Yet according to one theory, the CIA had Bermeja eliminated in order to expand the territorial waters designated for the United States. Or maybe Ben Linus turned a magic wheel and caused it to travel through time!

#7: Portugal’s Underwater Pyramid

In the early 2010s, a man named Diocleciano Silva discovered what he believed to be a massive pyramid under the Azores. Found between the islands of Terceira and São Miguel, it allegedly had a base of 8,000 square meters and measured up to 60 meters tall. Not only would an underwater pyramid be an amazing find, but this area has been underwater for 20,000 years. So the theory became that it would have been constructed by an ancient civilization predating the last Ice Age! The Portuguese Navy reportedly explained that Silva likely misinterpreted his data and had probably found an underwater volcano called Dom João de Castro Bank. Then again, they would say that to cover up an ancient pyramid!

#6: The Titanic Never Sank

Also in:

Top 10 Criminal Conspiracy Theories

Unsurprisingly, there are plenty of conspiracy theories about the Titanic. One posits that Wall Street bigwig J.P. Morgan had the ship sunk to kill some wealthy enemies that were onboard. But that’s nothing compared to the granddaddy of all Titanic conspiracy theories - that it never sank in the first place! Yep, some believe that the Titanic was secretly swapped with the damaged R.M.S. Olympic, and that it was the latter that went into the Atlantic. According to the story, that ship was considered unusable, so rather than having it decommissioned, the owners swapped it with the Titanic and collected the insurance money in a deadly scam. The theory has largely been debunked.

#5: The Baltic Sea Anomaly Is a UFO

Also in:

Top 10 Kennedy Family Conspiracy Theories

We return towards Sweden for the Baltic Sea anomaly, a round formation that looks suspiciously like a UFO. Swedish salvage operators OceanX were exploring the Gulf of Bothnia in the north Baltic Sea when they stumbled across the anomaly. Their sonar image shows a large circular object that some people posit is a flying saucer that crashed. If you look it up, you’ll also find comparisons to the Millennium Falcon. “Star Wars” did take place a long time ago, remember. Did the ship crash on Earth? Not according to the experts, who say the anomaly is just a boring old rock formation.

#4: Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 Landed at Diego Garcia

One of the most famous aviation mysteries of our time, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared on March 8, 2014, prompting an intense international reaction. There are many unanswered questions surrounding the event. However, thanks to recovered debris, we know that the plane crashed into the Indian Ocean. But not according to one conspiracy, which posits that the plane landed on the island of Diego Garcia. Found in the Indian Ocean, the island houses the secret Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia, which is operated by the American Navy and owned by the British Ministry of Defence. Others posit that the facility shot the plane down fearing an attack and covered it up to silence their involvement.

#3: The Bloop Was a Giant Underwater Creature

Also in:

Top 10 Conspiracy Theories About Presidents

In 1997, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration detected a noise in the South Pacific Ocean. It was loud enough to be detected on underwater microphones up to 3,000 miles away. When sped up, the noise sounds like a loud, bubbling “bloop,” hence its famous name. For many years, some believed that this noise was made by a giant underwater creature not yet detected by humankind. Some even speculated that it was a Kraken or even Cthulhu, the famous monster created by H. P. Lovecraft. However, the Bloop has been officially attributed to glacial motion causing seismic activity. Boooooring.

#2: Atlantis Is Out There

Also in:

Will We Ever Find Atlantis? | Unveiled

Atlantis is perhaps the most famous mythical location in human history, a fictional island that was said to have sunk somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. The island was devised by Plato, who used it as a way to describe the dangers of unchecked power and pride, and the wrath of the Gods. While the consensus is that Atlantis is indeed a work of fiction, some speculate that it actually exists - or, at least, existed. This has become something of a widespread conspiracy, the roots of which are hard to pin down. It may be because there was a time where inexperienced scholars misunderstood the philosopher's intention, and mistook the tale for genuine history.

#1: The Paranormal Power of the Bermuda Triangle

Also in:

Top 10 Paranormal Conspiracy Theories

There are a number of paranormal “hotspots” in this world, but none more popular than the Bermuda Triangle. Stretched between Florida, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda, the Triangle has become world-renowned for the number of disappearances that have occurred within its boundaries. Some of the most notable incidents include the USS Cyclops and Flight 19, both of which vanished. Some of our more imaginative thinkers believe that the Bermuda Triangle is home to UFOs, a rift in spacetime, or even remaining technology from the aforementioned Atlantis. Others cite more natural explanations, like methane hydrates. Others still posit that there is no mystery at all and that the actual number of disappearances is not unusual.
