Interesting story about how much various online video projects pull in… Ultimately I think the question boils down to what your objective is: Money, Power, Respect… or Fame…

It says you need 500,000 views per month to quit your day job… I quit my day job to launch WatchMojo.com… it’s been two years, we generate many more views than 500,000 per month (sometimes we’ll do that in a day).  But we don’t make $100,000 per month, at least not yet, as does the Ask a Ninja guys (best part of the NewTeeVee Conference, by the way).  I think the bottom line is whether you want to build a business or be a star, but that’s a post for another day.

The short answer is no, because I’ve frequently read that only Mark Zuckerberg can remove Mark Zuckerberg as CEO of Facebook… he inserted that clause when he did either the Accel round or the Meritech/Greylock deal.

But few companies have seen public opinion (read bloggers and journalists) change so swiftly as Facebook. Personally, I think the “Mark Zuckerberg is Jesus Moses” talk was overdone, and equally, the “Zuckerberg is the Devil” talk is crazy too.

But between what Kara Swisher and Henry Blodget have written in the past few days, something tells me that the “between the lines” interpretation is that Zuckerberg’s days as CEO are numbered; well, to put it differently, his days might not be numbered, but the VCs should consider that.  And frankly, even if the paperwork says the VCs can’t do that, with enough pressure and what not, anything can happen.

Kara writes:

There is little question in my mind–and it has to be going through the minds of all Facebook employees and investors–that all this should be considered a major fumble on the part of 20-something CEO Zuckerberg, whose judgment on how to handle both Beacon and in waging the pointless lawsuit against 01238 seems deeply flawed at best.

More on that key issue for Facebook here in BoomTown next week.

Then, in Henry’s post, you see a “Walter Mossberg” (is it the Walt Mossberg? - Kara’s partner in crime at All Things D.) comment:

Time for Accel and Greylock to get a new CEO with a moral compass. Breyer can hopefully learn from this. Fast up can mean fast down.

I don’t think this will actually happen, of course, it might… but just because there’s a snowstorm outside and it’s fun to discuss, whom do you think - if anyone - should be brought it to serve as CEO of Facebook?

Six Apart unloads Live Journal to SUP.com, a Russian media company.  Some interesting storylines:

Russia vs. USA

It’s interesting to see more and more Russian media companies taking an interest in foreign assets and want to maintain a grip of local audiences.  There is a mirrored storyline with regards to what is going on in the world of politics and militarism, the struggle for the world’s natural resources and what is going on in technology…

Focus

Six Apart invariably could not have maintained a battle on four fronts: Movable Type, Typepad, Vox and Live Journal.  This move to unload Live Journal will allow it to focus on areas where it has an ability to win.  But,

Open-Source vs. Closed-Source

There’s a place for closed source solutions and let’s face it, not all individuals and companies will really want to embrace open source… but with regards to blogging, I think the community-supported tools, bells and whistles really make it hard for Six Apart to compete with Automattic’s Wordpress.

Technorati’s Lessons

Remember when Technorati turned down a bunch of buyout offers and today can’t give itself away… I think Six Apart might risk the same thing: yesterday it was the blogging platform du jour, but today there’s definitely a lot of momentum in Automattic’s camp.  Ultimately, however, I think…

M&A on the horizon?

Automattic recently turned down a massive acquisition offer, and instead sold more equity to VCs which provided founder Matt Mullenwag with a founder’s liquidity clause.  This allowed Matt to continue to build Automattic independently, which is key for an open source blogging platform, but this suggests that interested parties are circling around Six Apart… perhaps this was an example of Six Apart sprucing itself up for a sale?

Time will tell.

“We predict internet advertising to pass three milestones over the next three years,” ZenithOptimedia’s forecast said. “We expect it to overtake radio advertising in 2008; to attain a double-digit share of global advertising in 2009; and to overtake magazine advertising in 2010, with 11.5% of total ad spend.”

In 2008, Worldwide internet ad spending will climb to $44.6 billion from about $36 billion, as such, the Internet will overtake radio to become the fourth largest medium with 9.4% of global advertising share; and in 2010, it will overtake magazines to become the third largest medium with an 11.5% share.

Even TV, still the biggest and most powerful way to reach a lot of customers at once, is projected to essentially hold its ground on the global stage, taking a 37.9% slice in 2008 after getting 37.7% in 2007. Outdoor, for its part, will expand its stake to 5.7% from 5.6%, and cinema will improve to 0.5% from 0.4%.
“By 2010, China will be the fourth largest advertising market in the world and Russia will be 6th,” Jones says.
