When a dentist looks into your mouth, he is looking for more than just a cavity.

Your teeth, your gums and tongue are a tell-a-tale sign of how healthy you really are. Troubled teeth and gums aren’t always just a dental problem. Sometimes they indicate deeper issues, and dentists are starting to take notice.

“We look around the mouth and we look for color changes. We’re looking for certain smells. Spots around the gums,” said Washington dentist Joseph Kravitz.

Here are some conditions the possible clues dentists may be able to identify:

– Heart disease. Gums that have turned a “bright beefy red” or purple.

– Type 2 diabetes. Gums that bleed at the slightest touch although there is no plaque evident.

– Kidney disease. A sweet ammonia smell on a person’s breath.

– Acid reflux. Teeth that look worn and pitted, as if they’d been “dipped in battery acid.”

– Oral cancer. Gum tissues with white spots that last two weeks or more.

– Leukemia. Fiery-red swollen gums that just won’t heal.

– Osteoporosis. Black spots on tooth X-rays that indicate air pockets and dead bone.

– Stress. Gums that have pulled away from teeth, or teeth that themselves are fractured.

– Sleep apnea. An enlarged tongue and inflamed gums in the part of the mouth through which air passes.

– Pregnancy. Deeply swollen gums can indicate hormonal changes.

– Bulimia. Upper front teeth that are paper thin, with the enamel almost completely worn away, and teeth that hurt.

Kravitz said patients should make sure that dentists aren’t “just looking in their mouths for five to 10 seconds” and that a thorough inspection should take at least five minutes.

According to an article by Adam Taylor on The Huffington Post’s online newspaper, a Canadian restaurant will be taking it up a notch this Valentine’s Day.

The article reports that Mildred’s Temple Kitchen in Toronto, Canada is encouraging patrons to stop in for fine cuisine, followed by sex in their washrooms. That’s right, they want you to add spice and everything nice to your relationship by doing the deed in their stalls between Feb 12-15th. To me, this just adds a new level of oddity and awkwardness when waiting for a stall to free up.

To address the issue of health, there will be a french maid posted to keep the washrooms clean and the atmosphere going. Apparently this whole thing doesn’t break any laws or health code violations as washrooms are dirty anyways and the kitchen is off limits.

Still, I find myself worrying about old folks who may not be informed and need to use the facilities.

Oscar the cat was adopted by a nursing home in the idea that he would be a source of comfort to the residents, but rather than spending time with them Oscar will spend his day going from room to room.

He will sniff and looked at the patients, but rarely spend much time with anyone - except when they had just hours to live. In that case he will stretch beside the patient until they pass away.

He has become so accurate that staff will begin to call the patient’s family members when Oscar chooses a room.

When I was younger there was a segregation at the gym- men hit the weights and women did cardio-whether it was on the treadmill, stair-master or elliptical machine.

Today, men and women are on both sides due to the recent strength vs. cardio conundrum. To make sure that we’re working out as efficiently as possible, Women’s Health has figured out which is the better way to train depending on your goal.

To Lose Fat and Keep it Off
Winner: Strength

Why: Lifting weights gives you a metabolic spike which will burn more overall calories. Cardio burns more calories per minute, but weight training continues to burn calories after you are done as your muscles try and repair themselves.

Also, muscles burn more calories than fat since muscles need more calories to be sustained.

To Relieve Stress
Winner: Cardio

Why: Strength training can not beat the head-clearing effect that an aerobic exercise has. “Cardio elevates serotonin levels in the brain, a key neurotransmitter involved in improving symptoms of depression,” says Madhukar Trivedi, M.D., director of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Mood Disorders Research Program and Clinic.

To Love Yourself Naked
Winner: Strength

Why: Not only will you see your body get more toned as you work out, but you will be able to increase your reps and weights which will add to your feeling of accomplishment.

To Live Longer
Winner: Cardio

Why: There are so many health benefits to cardio: “It reduces the risk of obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, stroke, and even certain types of cancer.” The ticker-strengthening benefits are especially sweet: A stronger heart pumps more blood with each beat, circulating oxygen more efficiently throughout your body; aerobic activity prevents inflammation around your thumper; and lacing up your sneaks can increase the “good” cholesterol in your blood by up to 8 percent in just 8 weeks, according to a 2007 study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine.

bodypaint-messages.jpg

For those who have been tuning in to my exploits from Montreal’s Salon of Love and Seduction, I have yet another special report for you!

As you can see in the photo, that’s me getting a head massage with a nifty little contraption called the “Orgasmic Head Massager” from a topless lady sporting body paint. We’ll get back to the topless part in a moment, for now let me give some details on the device that she skillfully used.

So as you can clearly see, it’s a series of metal prongs with little plastic beads on the dozen or so ends. At first it can frighten you as its bunched up in a transparent tube, and upon being pulled out the legs instantly pop apart like a jumping spider.

As you can imagine, and to my complete surprise, the massage from this device was absolutely wonderful. The prongs tickled and sent waves down my spine. Now I don’t know about it being orgasmic… but you feel absolutely awake and like that bear must have felt in the Jungle Book.

Okay, back to the topless woman giving me the massage…well all I have to say is that she managed to sell the things to even the wildest skeptics at the booth, myself included… Mystery solved. However, I think that it should have included body paint, that may have sold me on the notion that this could possibly be an “Orgasmic Massage”.

So the final question is, why don’t I look happy in the photo? I mean, I’m getting massaged by a topless lady after all…

Well the answer is simple, my girlfriend took the picture!

This past weekend I travelled to Montreal’s Salon of Love and Seduction Show in Montreal.
From the many fascinating (and awesome) things that I saw was an exercise routine which instantly received my seal of approval…

Touted as an alternative exercise for women, Pole Dancing appears to stretch and strengthen most, if not all, of the muscles of the body.

Yes, you can easily find and join a class to learn the healthy and sensual dance form if you so choose. I for one will leave it to the ladies… however I would be very willing to buy a pole for my future condo. That way she can exercise and I can pretend to be a fireman!

I love to workout, but I’m always paranoid about looking too manly when it comes to weight training. I know as a woman this is impossible, but these tips from trainer Maxime Saint-Onge put my worries at ease. Saint-Onge gives four training tips to Divine.ca so that you can achieve that toned and tiny body you want.

Lift heavy weights. “Hypertrophy training (for increasing muscle mass) requires heavy enough weights combined with a maximum of 10 repetitions, back-and-forth. It’s important to repeat this set more than once (two or three times) and to give yourself a 60 second rest period in between,” explains Saint-Onge.

Many women are wary of weight training for fear of gaining too much muscle, but there is no need to worry. “You will look like a body builder only if you train as arduously as a body builder. Nobody gains that much muscle mass purely by accident,” says Saint-Onge.

Work out frequently. Saint-Onge reveals that studies have shown that exercising two or three times per week allows women and men to see their muscle mass increase.

Also, don’t forget that “a recuperation period of 48 hours between workouts is recommended,” as it gives your body time to rest and for your muscles to heal.

Eat adequately. As Saint-Onge says, “muscle hypertrophy, or muscle mass increase, is the creation of new muscle. For this to occur, the organism must be in a state of positive energy balance, meaning more calories are being consumed than are being burned.” But be careful, as this excess energy must be subtle (about 1,000 calories), otherwise the weight gain will be shared between muscle and fat.

“After muscle training, where the most important source of energy is sugar, it is important to consume carbohydrates. Your body will build muscle more easily so long as its sugar energy supply is high enough.

“In regards to protein, whether supplemented or not, know that it is recommended to consume between 1.4g and 1.8g of protein per kg of weight per day for an increase in muscle mass.” For example, a woman weighing 140 pounds (or 63.5 kg) requires 89g to 114g of protein per day. A tuna sandwich on whole wheat bread has approximately 15.9g of protein, a glass of 2% milk has 8g, and a four oz. steak has about 30g. If ever you’re in doubt, talk to a nutritionist or a workout specialist and/or refer to Canada’s Food Guide!

Gently combine cardio with muscle training. “The addition of cardiovascular sessions to your muscle training isn’t problematic, but they increase the energy you would burn and contribute to lowering the amount of stored sugar in your muscles.

“If you want to add aerobic exercise to a muscle training regimen, you have to make sure that the cardio doesn’t interfere with your muscle training (lifting weights after an intense spinning class, for example, risks not being productive due to the accumulated exhaustion). Also, you need to make sure to renew your stored energy, otherwise it’ll make it more difficult to build muscle mass,” he concludes.

-Use skim milk in place of flavored Coffee-mate in your two morning mugs.
-Eat a bowl of high-fiber cereal and you’ll consume fewer calories all day.
-Order bacon, not sausage, with your eggs.
-Choose a yeast doughnut instead of a denser cake one.

Cut 100 Calories at Lunch

-Put barbecue sauce, not honey mustard, on your chicken sandwich at Wendy’s.
-Top your burger with onions, lettuce, and tomato and skip the cheese.
-Ask for the 12-ounce child-size soda instead of the 21-ounce medium at the drive-through.
-Slim down your sandwich by using Arnold Select 100% Whole Wheat Sandwich Thins instead of whole wheat bread.
-Toss your salad with 1 tablespoon of dressing until every lettuce leaf is coated. You’ll get away with using half the usual serving size. Try this trick at dinner too.

Cut 100 Calories at Dinner

-Making meatballs? Mix half the amount of ground beef the recipe calls for with half as much cooked brown rice.
-Instead of two slices of medium pepperoni pan pizza, choose thin-crust.
-When munching on chicken wings, don’t toss the bones midway through. Seeing the evidence of your feast may help you eat less, studies show.

Cut 100 Calories from a Snack

-Trade 1/2 cup of premium vanilla ice cream for 1/2 cup of Breyers Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream.
-Ordering a cone? Make it the sugar, not the waffle, kind.
-Munch on Pirate’s Booty. In a study, switching to an air-puffed cheesy snack twice a day saved about 70 calories a pop.
-Grab a Dannon Light & Fit yogurt, not a low-fat fruit blend.
-Replace half the butter in cake, muffin, and brownie recipes with an equal amount of applesauce or mashed bananas. You’ll save about 100 calories for every tablespoon you swap.
-Indulge in a slice of angel food cake drizzled with chocolate syrup rather than three cookies.
