SIGG water bottles have been the latest must have accessory with celebrities after the swiss brand became the best alternative to plastic water bottles.

When Vini Khurana, PhD, an Australian (and Mayo Clinic–trained) neurosurgeon, announced that the link between cell-phone use and cancer was irrefutable–the result of his analysis of more than 100 studies–it set off alarm bells around the world. Use a cell phone, he said, and you increase your risk of developing a malignant brain tumor by two to four times. Until recently, the majority of research indicated little or no link between cell phones and cancer (the World Health Organization and the American Cancer Society maintain that cell phones pose no threat), but several new long-term studies have cast doubt about their safety. Given that cell phones and PDAs serve as lifelines for so many people–24 percent of 10- and 11-year-olds carry them–it raises urgent questions.

- Do cell phones cause cancer?

- Do cell phones emit radiation only when you are talking?

- What is a phone’s SAR value and why does it matter?

- What is the range of the radiation?

- Is it risky to carry a cell phone in your pants pocket?

- Are kids more at risk?

- What about texting?

The Bush Administrations Department of Health and Human Services is drafting a new rule that would restrict domestic family planning programs.

Currently, laws allow health care providers and professionals to refuse to provide abortions, but Bush’s draft would threaten the funding of organizations and health facilities who do not hire people who refuse to provide birth control.

The definition for abortion was made so broad that professionals could refuse to provide many types of birth control, including oral contraception.

Parent’s have been implementing this rule for years, “Don’t go swimming! You just ate!”

Recent research shows that this well-intentioned warning may be nothing more than an old wives tale.   This warning is based on the misinformed idea that the stomach will take away some of the oxygen needed by your muscles while swimming.

Dr. Peter Wernicki, aquatics chair of the American Red Cross advisory council on first aid, aquatics, safety and preparedness, says it is true some blood is shunted to the gut in digestion, reports Helen Branswell.

“(But) any healthy person has plenty of blood and plenty of oxygen and they can do both,” he says from Vero Beach, Fla.

“If you really are going to vigorously exercise - any exercise - eating a large meal beforehand is not a great idea,” Wernicki adds. “It can make you uncomfortable. It might affect your performance somewhat. But it’s not going to make you drown.”

Being over 35 meant lower pregnancy rates, higher chances of miscarriage for couple, study finds.

MONDAY, July 7 (HealthDay News) — Among couples with fertility problems, those in which the man is over age 35 have lower pregnancy rates and increased chances of miscarriage, a new study shows.

To come to this conclusion, French researchers looked at more than 12,000 couples who went to a fertility clinic in France.

In most of the cases, the couples were being treated due to the man’s infertility. The couples underwent a total of 21,239 intrauterine inseminations (IUIs).

The researchers found that women over age 35 had a pregnancy rate of 8.9 percent, compared to 14.5 percent in younger women.

“But we also found that the age of the father was important in pregnancy rates — men over 35 had a negative effect. And, perhaps more surprisingly, miscarriage rates increased where the father was over 35,” study author Dr. Stephanie Belloc, of the Eylau Center for Assisted Reproduction in Paris, said in a prepared statement.  Children as young as 2 should be tested for high cholesterol, group says

MONDAY, July 7 (HealthDay News) — In a further concession to the impact of the childhood obesity epidemic in the United States, a leading group of pediatricians is recommending that kids as young as 8 years old be given cholesterol-lowering drugs in hopes of preventing heart problems later in life. The American Academy of Pediatrics also recommends that children as young as 2 years old start having their cholesterol levels screened if they have a family history of heart disease or high cholesterol. Screening should start no later than 10, the academy said.

Dr. Steven P. Shelov, chairman of pediatrics at Maimonides Medical Center and head of Maimonides Infants & Children’s Hospital in New York City, said he agreed with the new guidelines. “More aggressive screening is a good idea, and the use of [cholesterol-lowering] statins at relatively low doses will keep cholesterol at safer ranges.” Read more…
