2008 is shaping up to be a very successful year for Pop Evil which has steadily built a grassroots following since forming in November of 2001. Leigh Kakaty (lead vocals), Dave Grahs (Guitar), and Dylan Allison formed the early stages of the band in Grand Rapids, Michigan that has recently signed to upstart record Label Pazzo Music and are set to release their brand new single called “Hero“.

More info on the band:

After continually playing shows throughout the Midwest Pop Evil decided to go into the studio with Al Sutton (Kid Rock) to record. In 2005 the band released their first EP entitled “Ready or Not.” Already having sold over 12,000 copies throughout the Mid West the band is finally ready to release their upcoming debut album. Leigh claims that “It is amazing to see the level of support that we now receive in areas other than our home town (Grand Rapids). Everywhere we go fans know the words to our songs. It feels really good to see people relating to and embracing the music that we have created.”

In 2007, the band recruited Muskegon natives Tony Greve (Guitar) and Matt DiRito to help compliment the bands sound and stage show. Soon after the band teamed up with both Al Sutton, Marlon Young (Kid Rock), and Dave Cox to help record and finish their new album.

While the word is getting out due to a tireless touring schedule that sees the band playing well over 100 shows a year, the members know they owe it all to the local people that supported the music from the beginning. In the fall of 2006 their song “Somebody Like You” hit the radio waves and currently has over 1200 total media base spins on the most popular rock station in the area, 97.9 WGRD, and is currently the #1 most requested song in the city of Grand Rapids. Dave Gracia recently indicated, “From the beginning it meant a lot to see our friends embrace what we were doing, but it didn’t really set in just how much our local market stood behind us until I was driving down the road and heard our single (Somebody Like You).

Pop Evil perform new single “Hero” live:

Due to that demand more Pop Evil music is poised to soon start playing on rock radio stations around the country. Their music video for the track ‘Somebody Like You’ was shot by Jason Honeycutt and features Rossi Morreale and Britt Koth of MTV’s show 8th and Ocean. Soon after it was picked up by MTV Latin America, the video was a mainstay in the top 10. MTV has been increasing its support of the band, recently featuring the music on the hit show MADE. More support is sure to come in the near future.

Pop Evil’s self titled studio album produced by Al Sutton who has worked with Kid Rock for 10 years hits stores later this year. With so much momentum heading into 2008, the band is excited about touring throughout Michigan and is looking to booking dates throughout the United States.

Already boasting over 12,000 hits on Myspace in the last four days, the new video from Spectacula, Three Greats is proving as the single did to be a real success for the Queens Village rapper.

Using a quote from the famed cult classic A Bronx Tale about only having three great loves in your life, Spectacula launches into a visual offering of who his three great loves have been so far, The track which was produced by the NYC trio The Heatmakerz is off the digitally released debut album For What It’s Worth which is available through all online music stores.

“This video, which I thought was going to be a challenge, turned out how I had hoped,” Spectacula explained. “Using kids so young to act out the first of my loves was a bit stressful, but those kids worked out better than some of the adults,” he joked.

And in further Spectacula news, he is currently working on a new mixtape which will be hosted by DJ Furious Styles (Justo Award winner and XM DJ) called Classical Music. The tape will be avialable later this month and will be again solidifying why Spectacula is well on the way to becoming a welcomed name within the confines of Hip-Hop.

Ten years after I first begrudgingly admitted to liking their music, the Backstreet Boys played a show in Montreal that proved they’ve got staying power – in my mind, and the minds of 12,200 other Montrealers (mostly girls, let’s be real).

To start things off, the Boys boxed their way onto the stage – complete with boxing ring and shiny robes – and pumped out their hit ‘Larger Than Life.’  Modern twists on this older hit included a remix with the ‘Eye of the Tiger’ – to carry on the Rocky theme – and Nick Carter pulling a Kanye and rapping ‘Stronger.’

Nick, Brian, AJ and Howie showed that - even one member short - they could fill the stage with as much enthusiasm and showmanship as ever.  The show slowed down after the first few upbeat tunes, but these ballads are what the Boys are known for, so they disappointed no one.  ‘Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely’ (sung while the Boys “played poker”)  and ‘I Want It That Way’ are just a couple of the tunes that had the entire arena bellowing along in unison.  These fist-clenchers  brought out the lighters, or at least the cell phones mascarading as such.

Each member also took a turn at a solo effort.  Howie D went back to his Latin roots and gyrated on stage; AJ brought out the rock, running around like the crazy man he is, singing ‘Drive By Love’; while Nick and Brian both played songs from solo albums from a few years back.

A montage of hits brought the crowd back.  ‘Quit Playing Games,’ ‘As Long As You Love Me,’ and ‘All I Have To Give’ (complete with original hat dance) reminded the crowd why we love them.  And boy, did we love them.

Honestly, I was surprised.  The Boys would say, “Put your hands in the air,” and EVERYONE in the arena happily complied.  These guys have been together for 15 years, and – fortunately – they’re still willing to give the crowd what they want (even if it is cliché).  And this is a crowd who has been with them from the beginning:  Montreal fans will never stop bragging about how they were the first to discover this worldwide phenomenon (first in North America, anyway.)

Interspersed with their old tracks were some newer hits that fit right in.  Near the end of the show, they brought out the big guns with ‘Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).’  Not ones to disappoint, they even pulled out that dance that is now synonymous with boy bands (you know, the one you spent hours learning.  Oh, that was just me?)  And, with another remix up their collective sleeve, the Aerosmith classic ‘Walk This Way’ somehow merged seamlessly with this huge hit.

The Boys played one encore, ‘Shape of my Heart.’  They could have played 10 more songs and still the crowd would have wanted more.

But mainly, the concert brought back fond memories of days gone by.  To wax nostalgic for a sec, these Boys have grown up in front of our eyes, and we’ve grown up with them (as was evidenced by the average age of the girls in the venue: mid-20s, early 30s).  It was nice to feel 15 again, if only for one night.

And they still did the ‘Everybody’ dance.  Awesome.

Remember this???
