Following the widespread critical and commercial success of 2003’s Dub Side of the Moon and 2006’s Radiodread, Easy Star Records announces the Easy Star All-Stars’ complete reggae re-imagining of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The album, titled Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band, is set for release April 14 on Easy Star Records and features guest vocals from an impressive list of reggae, dancehall and dub greats including Steel Pulse, Matisyahu, Michael Rose (Black Uhuru), Luciano, U Roy, Bunny Rugs (Third World), Ranking Roger (English Beat), Sugar Minott, Frankie Paul, Max Romeo and The Mighty Diamonds. The first single, “With A Little Help From My Friends,” featuring Luciano, will be released as an iTunes exclusive February 10. It will be paired with a b-side dub version featuring the legendary U Roy.
Dub Side of the Moon, (Easy Star’s reggae tribute to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon) is one of the most successful reggae albums of the 21st century and spent over five years on Billboard’s Top Reggae Chart. Mojo selected the record as the second greatest cover album of all time. Radiodread, which tackled Radiohead’s OK Computer, spent over 18 months on Billboard’s Top Reggae Chart and earned praise from Radiohead themselves.
Of the decision to infuse reggae into the Beatles classic, producer Michael Goldwasser says “We’ve focused on re-envisioning concept albums as reggae and it’s really important that the source material works as a whole and is not just a collection of songs. So, what better to take on next than the mother of all concept albums?”
Goldwasser is once more the musical mastermind behind this album, having arranged and produced the music, assembled the musicians and guest artists and played guitar throughout. Goldwasser is joined by Victor Rice (bass), Victor “Ticklah” Axelrod (keyboards) and Patrick Dougher & Eddie Ocampo (drums, percussion). Members of the touring version of the Easy Star All-Stars also contribute, including Ras I Ray, Jenny Hill, Buford O’Sullivan, Ivan Katz, Kirsty Rock, Tamar-kali, Junior Jazz and Menny More. In addition to producing six albums for Easy Star, Goldwasser has produced albums for Corey Harris, Hatikva 6 and others, and has had compositions featured in the motion pictures Failure To Launch and Woody Allen’s Cassandra’s Dream.
For over a decade, Easy Star Records has been a trendsetting independent reggae label. Dub Side of the Moon and Radiodread form the backbone of a catalogue that includes progressive albums from John Brown’s Body and Easy Star All-Stars keyboardist Ticklah, reissues of classic material from Sugar Minott and Linval Thompson and new recordings from reggae legends The Meditations and Sister Carol.

In advance of Fist of God, the follow-up to 2006’s landmark The Looks, Toronto dancefloor juggernaut MSTRKRFT is set to release a Maxi Single of club-banging blog fave, and F’N MTV theme song, “Bounce.” The eight-track offering, due via Dim Mak Records on October 7th, features the original N.O.R.E. and Isis of Thunderheist-assisted track, released in April, “Vuvuvu,” and a plethora of remixes from rising stars in the dance community. For the uninitiated, MSTRKRFT is the production/DJ team of Toronto musician Jesse F. Keller and studio wizard Al-P. Their 2006 smash The Looks blurred boundaries between punk, house, hip-hop, grime, electro, and all kinds of electronic experimentation. Since forming, the team of Keller and Al-P have remixed a veritable who’s who of musical trendsetters – John Legend and Andre 3000, The Gossip, Justice, Usher, Wolfmother, The Crystal Method, Chromeo, Armand Van Helden, Kylie Minogue, Annie, Bloc Party, and Metric. The Bounce maxi single finds a few of MSTRKRFT’s friends returning the favor, with “Bounce” remixes from the likes of French up-and-comers High Powered Boys, MK labelmates Bloody Beetroots, and Vancouver-based rising star Felix Cartal, whose contribution to the release was premiered this morning on RCRDLBL and can be downloaded below.

The group Cookin Soul has taken it upon themselves to up the ante in this so called “Feud”. They’ve mashed up a bunch of Oasis and Jay-z songs into a new album called Ojayzis. Some are so/so, some are pretty cool… The “ignorant shit” and “girl in the dirty shirt” mix called “Ignorant Shirt” is particularly cool, although I’m not sure what happened to Liam’s vocals?

Pittsburgh based producer, Joe Money, who has worked with the likes of Raheem Devaughn, J-Live and most recently Common and Skillz is readying a new project entitled ‘Flying High.’ The producer driven album will feature Skillz, rising star Homeboy Sandman, BJ Digby as well as newcomers Reach, Yu, and Oddy Gato.
Joe Money is riding a new wave of notoriety off the strength of the Skillz single and video for “So Far, So Good” featuring Common and Talib Kweli off of the “Million Dollar Backpack” album. The long awaited Skillz album has been a breath of fresh air in a somewhat stagnant marketplace. Joe is honored that his track was selected as the lead single.
The video for the remix of “So Far, So Good” has been making the rounds and creating a significant buzz.
The “Flying High” album is also a homecoming and re-opening of sorts. Joe Money and Brooklyn Bodega President Wes Jackson. The two worked on several projects on Jackson’s Seven Heads Entertainment in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. “Joe produced some of our biggest records for J-Live and Unspoken Heard. Records that resonated nationally and globally. I am very excited to be working with him again. Just as we introduced a new sound years ago we are planning to do it again with Homeboy Sandman, Reach and others.”
Jackson went on to say, “I am also happy to be re-introducing the Seven Heads brand along with our latest successful venture, Brooklyn Bodega. We are taking our years of experience and marrying it with the new digital paradigm. We will be stronger, faster, leaner and more effective. This is a great project to launch the new iteration of Brooklyn Bodega, the re-launch of Seven Heads and the debut of Joe Money as a featured artist.”
“Flying High” is scheduled for an October release. Stay tuned for more details.
Busta Rhymes teams with Linkin Park for his new single/video “We Made It” from his forthcoming 8th studio album BLESSED, release date TBA. Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington, and Mike Shinoda will appear in the video, directed by Chris Robinson.

An unprecedented collaboration between Atlanta Ballet and Big Boi, one half of the multi platinum Grammy award winning group Outkast, big is the first time that these two art forms have been combined together. Big fuses the visual experience of Atlanta’s professional ballet company and hip-hop music, performed live by Atlanta’s own Grammy Award-winning visionary. The show also features new & never heard material interwoven with a classical masterpiece such as Verdi’s La Traviata. This unique on stage experience that features a long list of talented artists is playing for a limited time April 10-13, 2008 at the historic Fox Theatre. A fundraiser benefiting the Big Kidz Foundation & and Atlanta Ballet Centre For Dance Education hosted by Big Boi and Queen Latifah will follow immediately.
The music list for big includes tracks such as “Morris Brown” from the Idlewild Soundtrack, the popular hit “ “Church” from Speakerboxx, which won the Grammy Album of the Year(2003), and “Bombs Over Baghdad.” Other music pieces that will be weaved into the tapestry of sound include jazz and opera selections.
“big is the place, the event, and the experience where we leave our inhibitions at the door, and move forward. big is an example of possibilities…a place for the senses to open, and be lifted, setting a new height for creativity and awareness towards ourselves and the people sitting right next to us,” said the choreographer of big, Lauri Stallings.
The show also features other great artist such as Janelle Monáe, originally trained in classical & Broadway she has trademarked her own brand of soul/R&B. Best known to many as the silky voice on several of Big Boi’s popular hits, including “The Way You Move,” Sleepy Brown has garnered a following all his own. He boasts his own Top 40 single, “I Can’t Wait,” featuring OutKast, from his debut album Mr. Brown. Sleepy Brown is set to appear in several tracks for big, including “I Can’t
Wait” and Big Boi’s “Church.” Also lending their talents to big are Scar, Big Rube, Joi Killiam, Rock D and Khujo Goodie, as well as members of the musical group Konkrete.
Keeping in mind that cultural exposure, musical and literary expressions, and the invaluable experiences of travel, makes for a well-rounded person, solidifies the result of Big Kidz’s mission. “The importance of exposure is making a young person part of a conversation that society has been having without them for years,” remarks Big Boi about his foundation. “Creating, and having a positive contribution to the world we’re living in, takes knowledge on another level; takes expression on another level, and I want to be apart of making that happen”, ‘Big’adds.
Founded in 1929, Atlanta Ballet is the longest, continuously operating ballet company in the United States. Atlanta Ballet’s eclectic repertoire spans ballet history, highlighted by beloved classics and inventive originals. Atlanta Ballet opened the Centre for Dance Education in 1996 and is dedicated to nurturing young dancers while providing an outlet for adults to express their creativity. With diverse class offerings and student population, the Centre serves over 150,000 people in metro Atlanta each year. Atlanta Ballet’s roots remain firmly grounded in the Atlanta community and continue to play a vital role in the city’s cultural growth and revitalization.
With movies such as “Idlewild”, “ATL”, million of records sold as half of the supergroup Outkast, Antwan “Big Boi” Patton will be releasing his debut solo album this summer 2008. Enlisting producers Andre 3000, Organized Noize and Danger Mouse, the ATLien also looks to mix up musical styles by collaborating with Raekwon and Mary J. Blige. As he recently told Blender magazine (June 2007), “I’m giving the truth about what’s going on with me, with relationships, and politics. But there’s no set formula. I just want to keep it funky.”

In the meantime, heres a classic:
In honour of Amy’s big night at the Grammy’s I thought I’d feature her as this weeks MP3. The song “Valerie” comes from DJ/Producer Mark Ronson’s latest album called Version. In fact this song, isn’t even Mark Ronson’s song, Version is entirely made up of covers. ”Valerie” is written by another English band called the Zutons, but the way that Ronson and especially Winehouse transform the song it almost doesn’t matter who wrote it. Winehouse flat out blows the roof off with her vocal performance and if you never really “got” her before based off of that “Rehab” song, then this one will make everything much clearer. Ronson has somehow reworked the song into a Motown beat and Winehouse runs with it. Crank this one up:

Ever wondered what the result of a collaboration between Queen and Clipse might sound like? Or perhaps the Commodores and Lil’ Kim? Maybe even Lena Horne and 50 Cent? DJ Axel answers those questions and more with his full length mashup album, Breakin’ The Law. Now in its third pressing, Breakin’ The Law is an underground hit sure to keep building momentum. To get the scoop, see assets below, including audio stream and YouTube video link for first single “Push It Fergasonic” (Fergie vs Salt N’ Pepa vs JJ Fad), press release and more.

DJ Axel has released an all mashup album titled “Breakin’ The Law” on his own label Holden Records. The mashups combine Hip Hop, Rock, Disco, Funk and Ballroom combining artists as diverse as Van Halen vs T.I., Lena Horne vs 50 Cent and Stevie Wonder vs Snoop Dogg. “Breakin’ The Law” is now for sale at over 25 stores in major markets across the USA. Since the CD is an unlicensed bootleg album, most distributors are unwilling to carry the title. Axel took it upon himself to distribute the album by calling and visiting independent record stores. Retail and consumer response has been so positive that “Breakin’ The Law” is now in its third pressing.
“Whenever I play Axel’s CD in the store someone says how great it is and buys it, 2 times I didn’t even get through the first song before I sold it.” – Chris Seibert, Manager of Just Play Music, Santa Barbara, CA
Live shows, radio airplay, blog coverage and in-store play are driving the album’s success. Club Bootie, America’s only all mashup club, hosted Axel’s album release parties in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Burning Man. “Breakin’ The Law” has been added to over 150 college radio stations and has appeared on various CMJ charts. The album reached #1 on the playlists of six different major market college radio stations.
DJ Axel is a mild mannered finance guy by day and a crazy mashup DJ by night. His tracks have been featured on radio stations across the globe including Indie 103 (L.A.), Live 105 (SF), DC 101, and XFM Radio London. Axel has a monthly residency at the Viper Room in Los Angeles and is hired to DJ at high profile clubs and special events for clients including Warner Bros, Estee Lauder and New Line Cinema.
