Besides the Red Wings, Detroit has it pretty rough. Canadian Sam Roberts manages to capture the feel and look of the city in one rollicking retro tune. Check it out:

Sunday, October 19, 2008 Montreal QC Les Saintes
Hercules and Love Affair announce Canadian live dates in support of
their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album (released June 24
on Mute/DFA). After hitting some of Europe’s largest festivals this
summer (Glastonbury, Sonar & Pukkelpop), they also met with stellar
reviews and a rapturous audience at their sold-out US live debut at
Brooklyn’s Studio B. TheFader.com declared, “[People] love Hercules
and Love Affair the same way rabid Japanese teens must have loved
Bruce Springsteen in 1986, crush the barricades and cry at the sight
of an icon style love.”
The live show includes Andy manning keyboards, a horn section, drum
machines and providing backing vocals, Kim Ann and Nomi on lead
vocals, live drums, live bass and even more keyboards.
The album and lead single, “Blind”, debuted in the UK Top 40 and were

Love Affair is 2008’s most exciting dancefloor concoction, an arthouse
vision of pure pop by way of futuristic electronica and classic dance
music, where beautiful, bruising harmonies and tensile rhythms collide
in resurgent soundscapes and emotive disco workouts.
Here’s what the press have to say:
“…Butler’s debut album journeys through club music’s bent past with
both universal and timeless results that are as sensual and surreal as
a Jean Cocteau film set to a Giorgio Moroder soundtrack.”
SPIN, June 2008
“It’s a little bit Gamble & Huff, a little bit Caligula.”
Blender, July 2008

SoundMojo’s sister site WatchMojo had a chance to interview Indie rock’s nicest band, The Weakerthans:

TOKYO POLICE CLUB will play live on MTV’s F’N MTV Friday, July 25, performing “Graves” from its acclaimed debut album Elephant Shell. TOKYO POLICE CLUB’s live performance on F’N MTV marks a logical progression from previous performers and obvious TPC peers Lil Wayne, Maroon 5 and Snoop Dogg, and will school the show’s audience as to why the Newmarket Ontario quartet is “poised to be the biggest Canadian export since Molson” (ROLLING STONE).
Prior to the F’N MTV live performance, TOKYO POLICE CLUB returns to its native Canada this weekend for the Summersonic and Rogers Picnic festivals, while the remainder of July and August finds the band making its way through Australia, Japan and London.
TOKYO POLICE CLUB will continue its relentless touring regimen with another string of U.S. dates beginning September 8 in Baltimore and featuring headline dates at the likes of Los Angeles’ Henry Fonda Theater, as well appearances at the Street Scene, Treasure Island and Voodoo Festivals.

A great video by a great Canadian songwriter. The people are suitably “un” fashionable and the Robert Palmer dance at the end is pretty awesome, check it out:
“Home By Saturday” is a song off of Hayden’s Elk-Lake Serenade album from 2004 and the last album before his newest, In Field & Town is released in 2008. In my opinion this song exemplifies everything that’s great about Hayden’s music including subdued vocals, haunting guitar lines and interesting songwriting. If you’ve never listened to him before this is a good introduction and it should prime you for his new album, which I’m pretty excited about. Check it out:

Great Bloomers are a young band out of Toronto, Canada with barely an EP to their name, but lately I’ve been absolutely obsessed with this song. Citing influences ranging from the Beach Boys to Black Flag their music is an creative blend of folky/rootsy rock and the song “Catching Up” is a knockout starting off with harmonized vocals and moving into a full on rollicking guitar based tune with call and response vocals and guitar lines. I can’t get enough of it and can find something new and interesting within the song each time I listen. I’m very excited to hear more from these guys.
