Our sister site WatchMojo.com got the chance to interview Philly’s indie rock band Dr. Dog:
Philly based outfit Dr. Dog are a little over a month away from the release of their newest album, Fate. The album will be available on iTunes starting July 15th with an exclusive track, live music video, and booklet one week before hitting all other major stores on July 22nd. Earlier this month the band premiered a new track “The Old Days” on NPR’s All Songs Considered and The Fader, offering fans a glimpse into the long-anticipated follow-up to We All Belong, their 2007 release that truly broke the band and turned last year into the biggest year in Dr. Dog’s career thus far.
It was with the release of We All Belong that critics began drawing comparisons to Brian Wilson, John Lennon, Neil Young, and the ilk. Hefty influences for sure, but accurate comparisons for the group’s AM radio and classic rock ditties. The album received glowing reviews from press outlets nationwide, including a 3.5 out of 4 rating from People Magazine, an A- from Entertainment Weekly, and positive reviews in Billboard, Rollingstone, GQ Magazine, Esquire, and more and Dr. Dog were flung into the independent rock spotlight – appearing on the late night TV circuit and summer festival circuit before being tapped to open for alt-country kings Wilco and alternative rock godfathers Dinosaur Jr.
Fate is the fruit of a year’s worth of tours, TV appearances, and studio time. The album takes its title from the loosely shared theme of its tracks, and the band’s experience shows as they expand on the classic rock sound cemented in We All Belong. And while fans will have to hold their breath to hear all 11 new tracks in full, Dr. Dog will surely be slipping newbies into their set list as they hit the road for four months of touring, including gigs at Lollapalooza and San Francisco’s Treasure Island Music Festival. They’ll bring the action to TV with a July 17th appearance on Conan O’Brien.

Dr. Dog will release a collection of rare tracks on March 4th via Park the Van Records. Initially released as unmastered streaming audio on the band’s website, www.weallbelong.net, the ten re-mastered tracks on Passed Away are a lo-fi assortment of 4-track recordings made over the past five years leading up to and surrounding their 2007 breakout album We All Belong. Passed Away is just Dr. Dog recording songs because that’s what they do, not for anyone but kind of for everyone at the same time.
We All Belong effectively launched Dr. Dog into the realm of critically acclaimed indie bands, earning them praise from Rollingstone Magazine (which placed them at the #39 spot in its Top 50 Albums of the Year), Entertainment Weekly, GQ Magazine, NPR’s World Café, and more. Since then, the band has spent the year on the road with the likes of Wilco and Dinosaur Jr. and headlined their own tour with labelmates The Teeth and The High Strung. iTunes users will receive a live video of We All Belong’s “Die, Die, Die” filmed during this time with purchase of Passed Away.
And while the material on Passed Away is a glance at Dr. Dog’s past, the band is currently hard at work on a new studio album to be released later this year. In the meantime, they’re also hitting the road for select tour dates in February and March.
