Christmas is around the corner, and what better way to start thinking about the holiday season than to watch a bizarro music video where Bob Dylan sings a hyper active version of the classic tune, “Must Be Santa”… I love this:
Danish noir-rockers The Raveonettes cap a successful 2008 today with the release of Wishing You A Rave Christmas, the final installment in the band’s digital-only EP series. After months of touring behind their critically-acclaimed third full-length Lust Lust Lust, the duo of Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo announced plans in September to finish out the year with a string of four EPs. The initial installment was loaded with remixes courtesy of Trentemøller, Nic Endo and 80KIDZ and offered for free at Vice Records, followed by the electronically indulgent Sometimes They Drop By and the vintage Raves sound of Beauty Dies. The series concludes this week with the Holiday short-player, Wishing You A Rave Christmas, featuring the band’s mesmerizing take on Phil Spector classic “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)”. What’s more, with their purchase, Amazon.com patrons get an exclusive version of the EP featuring “Forever In Your Arms,” a B-side from Lust Lust Lust, which is currently raking in the year-end accolades, with Paste placing the album in its Top 25, and MTV Subterranean giving both “Aly, Walk With Me” and “Dead Sound” nods on their best videos of 2008 list. Wishing You A Rave Christmas is streaming in its entirety on AOL Spinner all week.

November 17th, 2008 — New York, New York — The five royal Princes of Hives Nation have teamed up with the Queen of Queens from Queens, Cyndi Lauper, to record the best holiday song this side of White Christmas (ok… maybe Silver and Gold as well). The Hives and Cyndi Lauper In A Christmas Duel will be released via The Orchard on December 1st in the UK and one day later on December 2nd in the US. As an early present to fans who have found themselves being particularly awesome this past year, the single will be exclusively available for free download via the band’s website throughout Thanksgiving weekend, Friday, November 28th through Sunday, November 30th.
While some would expect one of those warm-your-toes-by-the-fire-while-snuggling-up-to-your-loved-one-between-sips-of-hot-cocoa-and-smooches-under-the-mistletoe type of songs, The Hives and Cyndi Lauper offer more of a unique take for this holiday season. Let’s just say that the pair get a little scrappy. It also features a piano. Yay.
The Hives explained, “It may sound weird and come as a surprise to some, but we had to. It came to us. It landed in our lap and was way too good to shake or toss. We knew we had to record it. A sign if you will.” Cyndi Lauper offered “this goes to show even rat sideswipers can have a good Xmas too.”
So there you have it. The Hives and Cyndi Lauper bring you A Christmas Duel, wrapped in a box with a huge black and white bow atop.
