Are these guys the last great American rock band?  Well, probably not, there are countless great bands in the US, but there’s something about Pearl Jam and where they seem to be at as a band both musically and philosophically that separates them from the pack. They’ve been through it all and its nice to see them still at it.  Plus the new album sounds killer! Watch the brief documentary that explores the recording of the new album Backspacer:

The good news: Pearl Jam is recording a new album!   The bad news: Jeff Ament and another person were mugged and roughed up leaving the studio late at night… uncool. Why don’t muggers hang around the studio that Nickelback records at??   Read more from CNN.com:

So much for Southern hospitality.

When Pearl Jam — the Seattle, Washington-based grunge rock band — was in Atlanta late last month, bass guitar player Jeff Ament and a band employee were mugged outside a recording studio, a police report shows.

According to the DeKalb County Police Department, Ament and Mark Anthony Smith were attacked shortly before noon on April 27 when they arrived at Southern Tracks Recording, a studio in north Atlanta.

Southern Tracks is the home base of producer Brendan O’Brien, with whom the band has worked before. According to Rolling Stone, the band is recording a new album with the producer.

Three men reportedly emerged from a nearby wooded area wearing masks and brandishing knives. They smashed windows of the rented Jeep Commander, snatched a BlackBerry phone and other belongings, and demanded money, the police report shows. The suspects allegedly got away with more than $7,300 in goods and cash.

Ament jumped from the passenger side of the vehicle and started to run, but he was chased by a suspect and knocked to the ground, said Mekka Parish, a public information officer with the police department. Video Watch surveillance video of the attack »

She said he “suffered some lacerations” on the back of his head and was treated at the scene. His backpack was also snatched, she said, and included inside was Ament’s passport.

“At this time detectives believe the victims were not specifically targeted,” Parish said. “But they believe the suspects were familiar with the studio because of its isolated location.”

Though surveillance cameras captured the incident, the masks worn by the attackers have made identifying suspects difficult.

Witnesses reported seeing the suspects flee through the woods and hop into a waiting black Maxima, Parish added. Anyone with leads on this case is encouraged to call 770-724-7850.

This is great! From UltimateGuitar.com:

Pearl Jam has commenced recording of its ninth studio album with producer Brendan O’Brien, guitarist Mike McCready told Seattle radio station KISW last Thursday (May 1). Though only “four or five” songs are complete so far, McCready said the band is hoping to release the record in 2008.

The new effort, a follow-up to its self-titled 2006 album, finds Pearl Jam reteaming with longtime producer Brendan O’Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Rage Against the Machine) for the first time since 1998’s “Yield.” O’Brien has produced Pearl Jam’s “Vs.” (1993), “Vitalogy” (1994) and “No Code.”

“Brendan works really fast,” bassist Jeff Ament has told Billboard.com. “He’s a super pro. I’ve always felt, working with him, that he understood me as a bass player and that’s not always easy. A lot of producers are there to please the singer. But I’ve always had a great rapport with him. I can tell him I want something to sound like the O’Jays or Led Zeppelin or PJ Harvey and he gets it.”

“We’ve always been friends,” said O’Brien. “They were great to me when we were making records together [before], and we still remained very good friends…. I still think they’re a great band. Eddie [Vedder] has one of the best, if not the best, voices out there. When he sings, people believe them.”

Pearl Jam is also about to embark on a 13-date East Coast tour that runs from June 11-30.

In an effort to support Portland, Ore., U.S. Senate candidate Steve Novick, the band has set aside special tickets to its sold-out shows in New York, Camden, N.J., and Washington, D.C., that include donations to Novick’s campaign. Novick donation tickets to the Washington, D.C., show include access to a meet-and-greet with guitarist Stone Gossard.

Last month, Gossard was among a group of musicians that also included R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, the Decemberists’ Colin Meloy, Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker and Spoon’s Britt Daniel who released a letter of support for the candidate.

Pearl Jam’s eponymous 2006 album peaked at No 2 on the Billboard 200 and lead single “World Wide Suicide” reached No. 1 on the Modern Rock chart.
