Time Warner takes a page from the book of “give people what they want”

Enter SI Vault. If you are wondering what SI Vault is, as the name would imply, it’s 54 years of Sports Illustraded’s covers, images, stories and much more. If an image is worth a thousand words, what would 54 years’ worth of images be worth?

Here’s a story dating back to 1992, for example, on Christian Laettner and Duke. Hmm… Laettner? Duke? Pardon the shameless plug, but enjoy WatchMojo.com’s classic college programming:

Duke in Top College Programs:

And Laettner in Top College Careers:

All right, enough shameless promotion, now go and enjoy 54 years of SI at SI Vault.

WatchMojo.com is extremely proud to announce that it has partnered with the NCAA to give college hoops fans a very special initiative called the WatchMojo.com NCAA College Basketball Classic Series. Over the next few days and week, we’ll be unveiling a slew of videos showcasing some of:

- the greatest college basketball coaches,
- players who had the greatest college careers,
- a look at the college careers of some of the most successful NBA players, and of course,
- the top college programs in the nation.

The first list is a look at the top coaches. Before you click through and see the series, it should be stated that the omission from the video features of Phog Allen, the father of basketball coaching, is only due to there being limited footage of him… but we did think it would be blasphemy to leave him off the poll. Enjoy the videos, and vote your hearts out.

Now go off and see what made Bob Knight, John Wooden, Mike Krzyzewski, Adolph Rupp and Dean Smith so great.  Think we missed someone, vote and let us know.

Come back to see more videos as we unveil the other lists.

Roger Federer was on a winning streak again Andy Roddick during the Australian Open last four. Now at the US Open, Roddick is prepared to beat Federer at his own game.

Andy Roddick carries American hopes into the last eight of the US Open against defending champion and world number one Roger Federer.

It is a replay of last year’s final, which Federer took in four sets.

Earlier this year the Swiss star thrashed Roddick 6-4 6-0 6-2 in the Australian Open last four.

“He got on a hot streak and was able to reel off some breaks. Once Roger gets momentum, it’s tough to play catch up,” said Roddick, the world number five.

Federer holds a 13-1 head-to-head lead but Roddick, who saw opponent Tomas Berdych retire injured in the second set in his last match, is remaining positive.”

On the Fourth of July, this story - not quote sports-related - is fitting.

Chestnut, the great red, white and blue hope in the annual Fourth of July competition, broke his own world record by inhaling 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes — a staggering one every 10.9 seconds before a screaming crowd in Coney Island.

“If I needed to eat another one right now, I could,” the 23-year-old Californian said after receiving the mustard yellow belt emblematic of hot dog eating supremacy.

Kobayashi, the Japanese eating machine, recently had a wisdom tooth extracted and received chiropractic treatment due to a sore jaw. But the winner of every Nathan’s hot dog competition from 2001 to 2006 showed no ill effects as he stayed with Chestnut frank-for-frank until the very end of the 12-minute competition.

Once the contest ended, the runner-up suffered a reversal — competitive eating-speak for barfing — leading to a deduction from his final total. Kobayashi finished with 63 HDBs (hot dogs and buns eaten) in his best performance ever.

The battle for the NBA’s Most Valuable Player is down to 2 players, Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki.  There are valid arguments for both, but in my opinion Nash deserves the award hands down. No one can control the game like he does and if really came down to it and you needed a basket at the end of a game who would you rather with the ball in his hands.

Nash will win his 3rd straight.

In a showdown between the two top NBA records, Phoenix crushed Dallas 126-104 Sunday night. Dallas was at 9 straight wins before this loss but regardless of this extremely minor setback, Dallas has had one amazing season. So amazing that one could even rank them up there with the 1995-96 Bulls. With nine games left, if Dallas manages to put together one last streak (which is relatively short considering what they’ve done) they could hit 70 wins. That would make them second all-time for most wins in a season, behind the Bulls’ 72. The Mavs are still a long way from that mark, but it is possible.

I agree with some of these, but there are some glaring ommissions.

Yesterday the sporting world had the priveledge of watching two of the most dominant atheletes ever to play their respective sports. Tiger Woods won his 7th consecutive PGA tournament and Roger Federer won the Australian Open in Tennis without losing a set all tournament. These guys are both so good its scary. I will not be surprised if by the end of their careers they’re both considered the best ever respectively.

On a related note, I heard from someone that Federer and Woods are actually pretty good friends. That sort of makes sense, there’s no reason 2 of the most talented atheles ever should not have some things in common… but I wonder what they end up talking about?

Tiger: “hey Roger, remember when I was the youngest person ever to win the Masters?”

Roger: “hey Tiger, remember when I became the youngest player in the ATP ranking’s year end top 100?”

==

Tiger: “hey Roger, remember when I won 12 Majors?”

Roger: “hey Tiger, remember when I won 10 Grand Slam titles?”

==

Tiger: “Hey Roger, remember when we both kicked the crap out of everyone else in our sport?”

Roger: “Yeah”

The press can be very fickle in the NFL.  Maybe it’s the 16 game schedule.  Whatever it is, the Colts went from favorites to potential has-been’s.

Indianapolis went from Super Bowl favorites to post-season doubts when they lost 44-17 to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, the Colts’ third loss in four games.

After opening the season with nine straight victories the Colts (10-3) have suddenly lost their way, missing a chance to clinch the AFC south division crown in Jacksonville and losing their status as the conference’s top team.

The Colts’ Achilles heel all season has been the NFL’s worst run defense and the ruthless Jaguars (8-5) pounced on the weakness with rookie running back Maurice Jones-Drew rushing for a career-high 166-yards for a pair of touchdowns and returning a kickoff for another.
