When you hear about a match-up between Vikings and Indians, you’re probably more apt to imagine two sets of hulking athletes at a sporting event than a confrontation between sea-faring Norsemen and Native Americans. But that’s all going to change this spring. Next month, these two groups will square off on the big screen, and Wizard Universe has an exclusive peek!
On April 13th, 20th Century Fox will release “Pathfinder,” a dark, gritty film about Vikings who invade North America 500 years before Christopher Columbus to brutalize and enslave Native Americans. During one such raid, the Norsemen accidentally leave behind a young boy, who is taken in by the Indians and raised as one of their own. Years later, he must defend his new tribe when the Vikings return to prey upon them once again.
Thanks to Fox, Wizard Universe is proud to host 2 1/2 minutes of exclusive, action-filled footage of “Pathfinder” right here! Just click your preferred format below and get to watching!
Directed by Marcus Nispel (2003’s “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” remake), written by Laeta Kalogridis (TV’s “Birds of Prey”) and starring Karl Urban (“Lord of the Rings”), Moon Bloodgood (TV’s “Day Break”) and Clancy Brown (TV’s “Lost”), “Pathfinder” is rated R. A graphic novel based on the film was also produced by Dark Horse, and it’s in stores now.

The first contact between Europeans and Native Americans did involved Vikings, but it occurred in Greenland rather than North Amrica, and the Native Americans were the aggressors. Greenland, an alomost continent-size island, was uninhabited when the Vikings discovered it around AD 950. The Vikings built several settlements that flourished for around 200 years. But Native Americans crossed from North America and began attacking the Viking settlements around AD 1150. After a few small but bloody skrimishes, the two sides settled down to a long stalemate, with the Native Americans living in the north of the island and the Vikings in the center and south. However, the Viking settlements began to decline during the “Little Ice Age.” Historians are devided over whether bubonic plague or Native Americans killed the last of the Viking settlers.
