What do WatchMojo.com’s own Shawn Larkin and acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee have in common? Seemingly, not much.
Actually, there’s more to it than meets the eye: right now the men are connected via the Babelgum Online Film Festival where Lee is one of the judges and Larkin one of the contestants. Lee’s responsible for such hits as Mo’ Better Blues, Clockers and Malcolm X. His production company, 40 Acres & A Mule Filmworks, has produced over 35 films since 1983.
Larkin’s 7-minute movie Lolligagging tackles the deeper issues in life:
A nameless man sits in an empty bar, telling the bartender of his encounter involving a gay flirtation earlier in the day. His homophobia borders on hysteria. Out of nowhere, another man enters the bar and sits next to the unsuspecting customer. A tension builds as this new stranger reaches in his pocket to pull out a weapon of some sort. However, it is only a harmless lollipop. But sometimes the smallest things can have the most surprising effects on us.
I’ve seen the flick, it’s pretty good and “homophobia bordering on hysteria” is an apt description… and, if you vote for him and he gets enough votes, then he becomes Spike Lee’s problem. We’re just kidding.
