Some yogurts could be considered liquid candy bars; others sound medicinal enough to require a prescription. But understanding the nutritional ins and outs of this power food is worth the effort.

When it comes to foods that pose safety concerns, Americans tend to worry the most about meat, not fresh produce. In fact, a new national study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health shows that, of a representative national sample of 1,500 adults, 82% identified raw fish or sushi and 80% rare or medium-cooked hamburgers as at least somewhat risky. Only 36% of those surveyed found raw fruits and vegetables to be risky. Read more…

Tens of millions of Americans have quit smoking cigarettes. The benefits of quitting — no matter what your age — are prodigious. Risks of heart disease and stroke plummet. So does the risk of lung cancer, along with cancers of the mouth, throat, bladder, cervix and pancreas. But can the damage from smoking ever be completely undone? Norman Edelman, chief medical officer of the American Lung Association, explains.

Q: Does your body fully heal after quitting smoking?

A: When you quit smoking, the inflammation in the airways goes down. The little hair-like projections in the airways that we call cilia — which are paralyzed by smoke — begin to work again. So the lungs will get better in weeks to months. Breathing will get better. Exercise capacity will get better. Paradoxically, people find that they cough a little more right after they stop smoking, but that’s natural. That’s the lungs cleaning themselves out. Read more…

Watermelons contain an ingredient called citrulline that can trigger production of a compound that helps relax the body’s blood vessels, similar to what happens when a man takes Viagra, said scientists in Texas, one of the nation’s top producers of the seedless variety.

Found in the flesh and rind of watermelons, citrulline reacts with the body’s enzymes when consumed in large quantities and is changed into arginine, an amino acid that benefits the heart and the circulatory and immune systems. Read more…

WEDNESDAY, July 2 (HealthDay News) — Before heading to the gym, you should brush up on how to protect yourself from a potentially deadly superbug, say doctors from Loyola University.

While infections from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) usually occur in hospitals and health-care settings, they are on the rise in community locales, according to Jorge Parada, director of the infection control program at Loyola University Hospital in Maywood.

“There is no doubt that MRSA and other infections can be transmitted without direct person-to-person contact,” Parada said in a prepared statement. “Although it’s low, it is possible to catch MRSA by using shared gym equipment like free weights or exercise cycles. The first step in preventing the spread of any type of infection is awareness of the possibility.”

Generally, 5 percent to 10 percent of people are infected with MRSA. The superbug can survive for hours, even days, on the surface of gym equipment and other inanimate objects, Parada said. Read more…

WEDNESDAY, July 2 (HealthDay News) — Millions of Americans are afflicted by breakouts of unsightly cold sores, caused by the herpes simplex 1 virus, but new research is finally offering them the possibility of a cure.

Scientists at Duke University say they’ve unlocked the mystery of how herpes simplex 1 slips into dormancy and stays dormant — evading the drugs that might otherwise wipe it out.

Buoyed by that finding, the same team is testing an experimental agent that can “reawaken” the virus, so it might be flushed out into the open and eradicated.

The hope is that, “we could use the drugs that we already have, plus an effective immune system, to cure a person from infection,” explained lead researcher Jennifer Lin Umbach, a postdoctoral associate in Duke’s department of molecular genetics and microbiology. Read more…
