A recent study from New Zealand showed that more office workers developed deep vein blood clots (DVT) than passengers on long flights.  The authors of the study suggested that long periods sitting in front of a computer led to the DVT’s due to inactivity.  Once one develops a DVT, there is a 25% chance of a pulmonary embolism (PE) if untreated.  Some PE’s can be fatal.  The signs and symptoms of a DVT include pain, typically in the calf area, and swelling of the affected limb.  The diagnosis is conformed by Duplex ultrasound testing.  Treatment is initiated with blood thinning agents Lovenox and Coumadin.  The treatment times vary between 3-6 months.  The point of treatment is to stabilize the DVT and prevent PE.  The signs and symptoms of PE include chest pain and shortness of breath, but not all PE’s present with these classical symptoms.  The key to diagnosis of DVT and PE is suspecting the condition.  DVT and PE is the leading cause of preventable in-hospital mortality in the U.S.A.
