I don’t have any tattoos, and probably never would have. Maybe I’m too commitment-phobic to draw on myself (I’m not one to consider myself a canvas, although I do have the usual piercings). I had toyed with the idea of tattoos, briefly, but finally I – like many – decided it too risky and permanent. However, tattoo-regret may be a thing of the past thanks to a new type of ink, which boasts both its permanence and its easy removal.

Fortunately, this new type of tattoo ink takes only one laser treatment to get rid of. (I’ll let the experts explain what really goes on. But basically, the ink is trapped in polymer beads that are easily burst, allowing the body to reject the dye when removal is desired.) However, apparently tattoo artists enjoy their specific medium for its permanence, and therefore are against this new microencapsulation technology. Frankly, no matter how much one ponders a tattoo, the likelihood of wanting it to be on your body for the remainder of your life is little. And, I’m told, when you get older and your skin starts to sag, the tattoos don’t look so great. So many people seem to be suffering from tattoo-remorse, why not make life easier? No regrets, right?

As someone with a passing, somewhat casual interest in tattoos, I’d now consider sporting some body art because of this new ink. But I’d probably get rid of it in a few years, anyway.
