The Montreal Opera is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Italian master, Giacomo Puccini.
Place des Arts is premiering one of Puccini’s unknown masterpieces, La Fanciulla del West, on Saturday, September 20.
La Fanciulla del West is an opera in three acts that is based on the play, The Girl of the Golden West by David Belasco. In this opera, Puccini’s signature “verismo” style comes face to face with America’s Wild West. Featuring a love triangle, saloons and a poker game to save the life of a loved one, this is a play that everyone is sure to love!
The heroine, Minnie, is something new for Puccini’s leading lady. Unlike the sad, put-upon, mostly doomed leading ladies of his other operas, Minnie takes gun, and fate, firmly in hand.
