FOREVER YOUNG

Who needs that New Years kiss this holiday season to warm you from the top of your head to the tip of your toes when you can do it yourself with yoga that’s poised to help!

On Sunday, December 14 at 5pm at the Walker Studio participate in Bikram Yoga Montreal’s third annual holiday karma class. This typical Bikram yoga class, a challenging series of 26 postures and 2 breathing excercises practiced in a heated room, will leave you feeling fabulous.

Not only will you be benefiting your body, but all the donations will be donated directly to the Share the Warmth Foundation. Share the Warmth Foundation “awakens hope and dreams by overcoming poverty and hunger.” While you suffer in the heat, you’ll be working towards helping someone less fortunate keep warm.

If the thought of helping others warms your heart you can easily help without sweating. Leave a donation with either Bikram Studio.

Bring your friends, family and colleagues to discover a new way to stay healthy while helping others! And who knows…maybe you’ll find your New Years kiss as well.

MONTREAL, QUEBEC–(Marketwire - Aug. 23, 2007) - Today and tomorrow, August 24, 2007, over 2, 000 underprivileged children from the greater Montreal area will receive more than 50, 000 school supplies that meet the Montreal School Board requirement.

This monumental school supply distribution organised by Welcome Hall Mission will take place at its Multi-Service Centre in St-Henri. With this event, the Mission hopes to give children from poor families a chance to start the school year with a sense of dignity, belonging and pride in their education.

The 6th edition of “Back to School with Heads Held High”, starting at 9 o’clock on Thursday, August 23rd, is the largest yet. This year, the Mission was granted the support of prestigious partners such as the Marcelle and Jean Coutu Foundation, Telus and La Presse, whose great generosity has made this important event possible.

The average value of a back-pack filled with school supplies is estimated at over $100. Thanks to the generous contributions of the partners, each child will receive a brand new schoolbag filled with supplies such as scientific calculators for high school students, dictionaries, pens, glue sticks, lunch boxes and so much more. Welcome Hall Mission would have not been able to rise to this challenge without the support of its many other partners such as: Steadtler, Yellow, Henkel, Corlab, BIC World, Hachette Canada Inc., centre TYPO, Fidelity Investments Canada Ltd, PriceWaterHouseCoopers, Great West Life and the South-West Borough of Montreal.

With the dropout rate close to 40%, Quebec is one of the provinces most affected by this problem. The blight of this phenomenon on the economy and social fabric of our society cannot be ignored. In all of Quebec, Montreal is the city most affected. While Tuesday, August 28th marks the beginning of another school year, close to 5, 000 teenagers will not be returning to high school. According to the Ministry of Education, poverty is partly to blame.

Therefore, Welcome Hall Mission thought it necessary to grab the attention of the city’s elect, thus allowing Jacqueline Montpetit, mayor of the South-West Borough, as well as Lisette Lapointe, Deputy of Cremazie, the opportunity to express themselves on the subject of education and poverty during this festive event.

Situated in Montreal for over 115 years, Welcome Hall Mission is a non-profit organization whose primary concern is the struggle against poverty. The Mission owns a total of three buildings in Montreal. Back To School with Heads Held High is an initiative of Welcome Hall Mission. This service does not receive any government funding.

looking for live organic hip hop and soul in Montreal? if so, it is imperative that you hustle your bustle down to Sablo Kafe (50 St. Zotique, coin St. Dominique Metro Beaubien) on tuesday night. each week promises to showcase different players from a talented roster (which includes one Jason “Blackbird” Selman, who currently plays trumpet for the MOYO show at the MAI, the newly minted saxophone music cd releasing public proposer Jason Sharp, and special guests like beatboxxxer and calesthenics specialist Lateef Martin-whose music reviewing words you read in publications like the Mirror and Nightlife). Jahsun, the creator of the collective is the constant, as the master of all things percussion usually is. can the drummer get some?!

“intimate” is an understatement, as the venue usually gets so packed that there is never really room to dance, but it only takes but a little space to bob your head and sway a bit. the musicians are stellar and they take turns turning leitmotifs into the musical equivalents of your McGill thesis, and you are left in complete awe of how a vibe can be personified to actually being in the room with you and kick start your week.

there is a one-drink minimum (in addition to the meagre $5 tithe as strongly recommended entry) but the cafe is liscenced, with a wide range of herbal teas and coffees, as well as carbonated delights for the non-consuming. the samosas are quite delightful and the nachos are a good look for sharing.

kalmunity is a jump off for learning about like-minded events that the players are also involved in community wide, and a living reminder of all that can be achieved when we live in the moment.

Ally Ntumba Beya and the Collectif MOYO present the uplifting and original play “Village de Bonne Esperance” in French. The show opened strongly this weekend and plays next Friday and Saturday at 8pm. The Sunday matinee shows (3:30pm) are free for youth 15 and under so if you’re looking for a family friendly activity that won’t cost you an arm and a leg (unlike going to a movie these days), head to the MAI (3680 Jeanne-Mance, www.m-a-i.qc.ca) for a cultural experience that you won’t soon be forgetting. The tale of star-crossed lovers is an honest and touching portrayal of so much more than just that, as the themes of monarchy, racial purity, class and family are explored with a timeless twist. The set is amazing, the cast performs in true African form (where everyone does everything, all the singers are the actors who dance and play the instruments) that is to say to the epitome of “multi-tasking”. And by “epitome” I mean that they all do everything well, and not just for the sake of doing everything. The role of the spectator is an active one, as there are seats only for those with limited mobility. Everyone else is encouraged to follow the action over five stages, and the actors move and linger through the crowd for the duration of the play. The singing and dancing numbers are impossible to resist and you will want to shout about your experience from the mountaintops. Check into a membership at the MAI as well for a reduced price as the program promises a dynamic 2007 season.
