Desperate times call for desperate measures. That is why the Taverne Crescent, situated on one of Montreal’s historic party streets, decided to implement a new policy: Pay what you can.
Restaurants are feeling the decline of American tourists and are doing what they can to survive.
After enjoying their meal of what could include an appetizer, plus either tagliatelle bolognese, salmon or braised beef, and coffee or tea- customers can pay as they like, ten dollars, a dollar or nothing.
“Some people might pay nothing,” said owner George Pappas, “but maybe when they have more money in three or six months, they’ll come back and pay more.”

looking for live organic hip hop and soul in Montreal? if so, it is imperative that you hustle your bustle down to Sablo Kafe (50 St. Zotique, coin St. Dominique Metro Beaubien) on tuesday night. each week promises to showcase different players from a talented roster (which includes one Jason “Blackbird” Selman, who currently plays trumpet for the MOYO show at the MAI, the newly minted saxophone music cd releasing public proposer Jason Sharp, and special guests like beatboxxxer and calesthenics specialist Lateef Martin-whose music reviewing words you read in publications like the Mirror and Nightlife). Jahsun, the creator of the collective is the constant, as the master of all things percussion usually is. can the drummer get some?!
“intimate” is an understatement, as the venue usually gets so packed that there is never really room to dance, but it only takes but a little space to bob your head and sway a bit. the musicians are stellar and they take turns turning leitmotifs into the musical equivalents of your McGill thesis, and you are left in complete awe of how a vibe can be personified to actually being in the room with you and kick start your week.
there is a one-drink minimum (in addition to the meagre $5 tithe as strongly recommended entry) but the cafe is liscenced, with a wide range of herbal teas and coffees, as well as carbonated delights for the non-consuming. the samosas are quite delightful and the nachos are a good look for sharing.
kalmunity is a jump off for learning about like-minded events that the players are also involved in community wide, and a living reminder of all that can be achieved when we live in the moment.
It’s hard to make a decision on this, on the one hand, eBay strives to be the de facto auction platform in the world, on the other hand, it is an Order of Canada medal… for the love of all things holy!

Popped in to the Diesel and Style Exchange Sample Sale on Meilleur street (just East of Chabanel).
Frankly, the Diesel sale was a bit of a letdown, no real specials, but buy 2 get one free kind of thing. Judging by the number of people, I am not alone in that assessment.
But… the Style Exchange sale just next door on the fifth floor was pretty good. Very good merchandise - if you can handle navigating through all the crap. Better yet, extremely discounted prices. I think my wife and I picked up about 10 items for less than $200.
It’s on until tomorrow. If you can put up with the chaos, you will thank me for it.
I never thought I’d be telling my wife: “you have to get that Hooch,” but that is precisely what I told her this weekend at Fab Inc’s warehouse sale, for discounted Hooch, Bench, Superdry, Firetrap, Fullcircle, Golddigga items.
Sale ends Dec. 3rd, and it’s right next to the Hippodrome on Pare Street…
Check it out here.

So what if it’s almost winter? If a girl wants ice cream, she should be able to get ice cream! And not just depanneur ice cream either. After pouting about Ripples being closed, I walked further down St.Laurent to stumble into Terraza, where they boldly boast an unabashed selection of gelatis, even in this weather. They also have a giant water fountain over two flat walls that’s worth seeing, if not questioning over environmental feasibility, but it is relaxing and doesn’t make you want to pee while you’re having dessert, so I guess that’s saying something. Once you come around the case (they are very obliging about letting you play Gelati Idol taste test), you see that there are many unique offerings from sweet to savory, most of them named after some exclusive happening in Montreal (ie. “le Jazzfest”, ok, so maybe that’s not the exact name, but you get the idea). There’s also a housemade dessert cheese that’s rich like marscapone, but slightly different. Once again, let’s reiterate how serious Quebeckers are about their dairy. Rumour has it that there will be a watchmojo.com video clip coming out soon about that….
ok, so who doesn’t like Indian food, right? there are no shortage of places to go in Montreal for Indian fare, and you can certainly go to Golden Curry on St.Laurent and Fairmont (follow the “best of” in the city guide, but keep in mind that they also rate McDonald’s for “best fries”) and impress your date with decent eats and stroll to the reggaeton desert shop next door (Kilo) for a decently moist and delicious cake from their expansive display or get a sugar high from their candy offerings. the thing is, you’ll be paying out your pocket for what would be just as good if not better at Maison Indian Curry at 996 Jean Talon West (and St.Birnam) which is completely worth the bus fare or hijacking of a vehicle to get there because the portions are huge, the prices are cheaper than dirt, and the restaurant and staff are pleasant and charming. their chana samosa (a crispy samosa beneath a mountain of spicy chickpeas, or “garbanzo beans” to some) is enough to fill you up, but bring an appetite so you can sample all the goods.
