The coolest thing about being Canadian is being tacky (and giving things titles like I did this post). Every time someone remotely famous passes through our air space, those plastic sycophants on eTalk Daily will find a way to glamorize it. And if someone Canadian actually makes it anywhere doing anything, if their backwater hometown doesn’t name a highway or mall after them, then we’ll stamp their name into a Toronto sidewalk because we really are distinct from the celebrity-obsessed-world-super-power neighbour.

For these reason (and others) the government gives tax breaks to studios that churn out cliched crap so long as 51% of the people involved in its making were Canadian. Apparently, making second-rate imitations of what Hollywood was doing 5 years ago shores up our cultural identity, and that’s why we get to watch flicks like Bon Cop Bad Cop. It’s so Canadian because it features hockey and both official languages.

But, unlike Hollywood that tries to cover up that they’re using cheaper Canadian labor and filming in Montreal, Bon Cop Bad Cop actually took place here. This made us all feel good because now even the movies shot here are in both official languages. In your face T-dot — it had to be some internet-porn-geek that came up with that abbreviation.

Anyways, one of the many Montreal landmarks that made it into the film was Spurs Country Bar. It was the bar where one of the cops almost got his ass whooped until he dramatically persevered and then stuffed the perp in the trunk of his car. I’ve never been in the place because it’s along a strip of St. Jacques known for its hooker motels and used car lots, but I’ve heard stories. In any case, here’s a picture that makes it look authentically country-western because it advertises a live band.

Deadline : August 15, 2007

MAI ( Montréal, arts interculturels) launches the third edition of its Guidance and Mentoring Service, designed to help artists and artistic organizations coming from cultural communities to grow as artists and administrators of their work.

Recognized for its ability to make strong ties between artists, partners, and communities, the MAI has already guided over a hundred artists who have profited from occasional, short, and long term services.

In particular, the MAI advises artists in visual and performing arts, we give administrative help (eg : assistance in applying for grants, budget making, accounting), offer technical support (eg : lighting design), promote shows, and publish books and multimedia tools linked to art projects. All in all, the MAI’s service packages are tailored to the needs of each artist.

Each year, 5 projects are chosen for the Guidance and Mentoring Service in the short and long terms. Submissions are studied by a selection commitee and every candidate is required to:

§   Be an artist or a non-profit organization

§   Work in the field of art

§   Be an art professional or soon-to-be art professional

§   Come from a cultural community

§   Live in Montreal

In keeping with the mandate of the MAI, projects must have an intercultural theme.

The deadline for project submissions for the season 2007-2008 is : August 15, 2007

For more information about the program (required documents, selection criteria, etc.), we invite you to visit our website www.m-a-i.qc.ca or contact Patrick Campbell, Activity and Guidance Service Coordinator, by calling (514) 982-1812 ext. 222.

This project is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Communications Québec and the City of Montreal as part of the Entente sur le développement culturel de Montréal 2005-2008.

MONTREAL, QUEBEC–(Marketwire - June 20, 2007) - Sofitel Montreal officially launched its patio for the season, with a cocktail event with a twist: the theme was based on experiencing an enhanced culinary appreciation by invoking all the senses. The event was inspired by a course taken by the sous-chefs and servers of the hotel’s Renoir restaurant with the objective of improving their understanding of how we relate to and experience food, thereby enhancing the pleasure we take in dining.

The course, which was given over five, two-hour sessions, was taught by Ms. Andy Brasseur, an instructor trained in teaching the stimulation of the senses. The training educated students on how to focus on and engage all the senses (touch, sight, hearing, taste and scent) when enjoying food, elevating the experience beyond the mundane (simple consumption) to the sublime (creating a more fulfilling and memorable culinary occasion). Ms. Brasseur was trained at the Institut du Gout in France (the “Taste Institute”). Her training follows a method created by Jacques Puisais which aims to educate individuals on how to better understand our reactions to food and to better appreciate what we are eating.

The staff of the Sofitel’s Renoir are the first and only restaurant personnel in North America to have obtained certification in taste training according to the Jacques Puissais method. This exceptional training offers the clientele of Renoir a unique benefit in that the staff is prepared to answer any and all questions regarding the food and/or preparation from a more in-depth perspective, and are not limited to the “obvious” observations such as ingredients.

The cocktail was held on the hotel’s elegant patio and featured Renoir’s new Ice Station, inspired by a new area of fine cuisine, “molecular gastronomy”, which involves the application of science to culinary practice.

Sofitel: 200 premium hotels around the world

Because no one country or city is the same, Sofitel has made each of its 200 hotels around the world a truly unique establishment. Combining the spirit of each place with the values of modernity, refinement and absolute comfort, they are all imbued in their inimitable way with the French “art de vivre”.

Whether their setting is a great business metropolis like Paris, New York or Bangkok, or nestling in the landscape in Indonesia, Polynesia or Brazil, each Sofitel hotel offers travelers a genuine haven of peace. So that each guest, for an overnight stay or longer, during a business trip or for a holiday, can enjoy the rich variety of these unique places in comfort and tranquility.

Accor, European leader in hotels and tourism, global leader in corporate services, operates in nearly 100 countries with 160,000 employees. It offers to its individual and corporate clients nearly 40 years of expertise in its two core businesses:

- Hotels, with the Sofitel, Novotel, Mercure, Suitehotel, Ibis, Red Roof Inn, Etap Hotel, Formule 1 and Motel 6 brands: over 4,000 hotels and 475,000 rooms in 90 countries, as well as strategically related activities, such as Lenotre, ambassador of the gastronomy ‘a la francaise’ worldwide;

- Services to corporate clients and public institutions: 21 million people in 35 countries benefit from Accor Services products - meal and food vouchers, people care, incentive and loyalty programs.

All Hail Queen- Life Beyond the Sun
Montreal January 15, 2007 - A voice that resonates from her soul is one way of describing the songstress Odessa “Queen” Thornhill.  Such a powerful tool, you will become a believer from the touch of her words.  Queen has spent a lifetime living in song, and March 4, 2007 Montrealers will be graced with her exquisite performance at the Kola Note 5240 Park Avenue.

In this second phase performance of Life Beyond the Sun, Queen will be sharing her stories through song and spoken word as well as performing music from her upcoming album entitled “Who I am”.  Backed by dance troupe WASAIKA and a combination of drummers as well as Musicians from the Kalmunity Vibes Collective her words will jump off stage and into your hearts.  This will be the performance of the year that Montreal has been waiting for.
After performing abroad in different ensembles, Queen has been at home in Montreal where she’s been laying down roots with local projects.  As a resident vocalist in the Kalmunity Vibe Collective (a collective of over 60 musicians and vocalists), she has helped give this group its signature sound.  Queen can be seen performing with Louis Toteda’s Corporate Band “La Gioventu”.
Queen has also had the opportunity to perform with great artists such as Zale Seck from Senegal and Muna Mingole from Cameroon .

Always on the move, she has also embarked as an entrepreneur with Her production company Uzuri.  This organization is focused on networking entrepreneurs, individual artists, bands and collectives.
Also featured in the evening will be a fashion show from jewelry designer Andre Silas Reynolds.  Originally from Barbados, his unique style fuses elements from his homeland as well as materials found here in Canada.  All of the jewelry is inspired by nature, using only materials found within; such as seeds, coral, bone, coconut and antler. This show will be featuring new pieces from the Velvet Pearl Collection, as well as the Spring/Fall 2007 line.

He has hosted two fashion shows in Montreal (1997 & 2000) in collaboration with fashion designer ‘Carl’.  His works have been on display at art galleries such as the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art (US)… Alvear Studio, design and imports (Baltimore, Maryland)… San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (San Jose, California)… He has also presented in various festivals throughout the Caribbean.
