Desperate times call for desperate measures. That is why the Taverne Crescent, situated on one of Montreal’s historic party streets, decided to implement a new policy: Pay what you can.

Restaurants are feeling the decline of American tourists and are doing what they can to survive.

After enjoying their meal of what could include an appetizer, plus either tagliatelle bolognese, salmon or braised beef, and coffee or tea- customers can pay as they like, ten dollars, a dollar or nothing.

“Some people might pay nothing,” said owner George Pappas, “but maybe when they have more money in three or six months, they’ll come back and pay more.”

This week, the newspapers were all talking about Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone’s not so veiled threats that Montreal needs to invest in its racing infrastructure, not so much the track itself but the amenities surrounding it.  The city was quick to point out that this falls on the shoulders of organizer and promoter Normand Legault.

Every first or second week of June, I am reminded of the fact that our great city thinks that one weekend of tourist-influx madness is worth putting up with such blackmail.

Yet, seeing 20 or so professional baseball teams parade into town for 3-4 nights for 81 home games is not, or rather, was not.

If you do the math, 50 or so people that each club brought into town x 4 nights x 81 games = 20,000 people, or 2% of the city’s population, all coming in over a period of 6 months.  That’s just the club entourage, you can add out of town fans, reporters, etc. and the numbers add up.

Frankly, my dad - who owns a hotel in the city - tells me that the F1 weekend is a mixed blessing: crazy for a weekend at the expense of the surrounding days… something tells me that dollar for dollar, the economic windfall of a baseball club added a tad more than that of a weekend of hedonism.

But, maybe that’s just me…

Canada’s international travel deficit soared to an all-time high in 2006, as spending by Canadians in both the United States and overseas climbed to record levels.

The deficit - the difference between spending by Canadians abroad and spending by foreigners in Canada - jumped $1.4 billion to an estimated $7.2 billion in 2006.

The travel deficit has increased every year since 2002, more than quadrupling in the process.

The burgeoning deficit was the result of record spending abroad: Canadian residents spent an estimated $23.6 billion outside the country in 2006, up 6.2 per cent from the previous high in 2005.

Foreigners in Canada spent about $16.4 billion in 2006, a slight decline from the previous year.

Canadian spending abroad has gone up 27.9 per cent since 2001, while there has been little movement in foreign spending in Canada.

Canada’s travel deficit with the United States climbed to $4.5 billion in 2006, the highest since the early 1990s when record deficits flirted with the $6-billion mark and well above the $544 million figure in 2002.
