Like a scene in a movie, picture an East Village dive bar: dark, threatening, sinister. But the music in the background offers a feeling of hope. As the music continues it aptly paints the New York City skyline for you. The lights are bright, but those wandering the streets beside you are clearly not stable. Enter the world of SUPERCREEP.
Growing up in Wayne, New Jersey, JODY DELLI SANTI aka SUPERCREEP always knew that he wanted to make his musical mark .Prior to his move across the river to the New York City, Jody spent years studying music and musical history. While Jody focused on his studies of classical and jazz music, he soon came to realize that it had nothing to do with good songwriting. “Most musicians that pride themselves on playing their scales as fast as they can usually end up in wedding bands and that sounded fucking frightening to me. On the other hand, if I didn’t do all that studying I wouldn’t have been able to play every instrument on my record,” Jody confesses about playing the keyboards, guitar, bass and drums on his self-titled debut.
Once in New York, Jody played numerous dive bars in the East Village “Some nights we were great…some nights we were too drunk to play….but no matter, we made great music together.” Jody admits, “Deep down we loved each other, but most of the time we hated each other.” This led to Jody’s independence from the band and his eventual move to Los Angeles where he randomly stumbled across the players that would help him form the most complete incarnation of SUPERCREEP. With the classically trained keyboard virtuosities of Lauren Pardini, former guitarist Matt Maroulakos on Bass and the rapid fire drumming of Johnny Dinu, Jody found a musical kinship like never before. This four piece band of self professed ‘supercreeps’ have rapidly gained a reputation for their tight and entertaining shows within the jaded folded arm movement ever present on the west coast. From teen centers to hipster hang outs, the band is fast becoming a vital part of the burgeoning underground music scene.
Though the debut album on Pats Record Company was constructed in a basement by Jody, as a live band SUPERCREEP flourishes while breaking that generic mold of rock and pop that incessantly invades our weathered ears. This is not just the future of rock or of pop, this is the fusion of many musical genres culminating in a potent mix of certainty that cannot be denied. The record opens with the Blender Mag approved unapologetic rock anthem “Mushroom Cloud” that embodies the invincibility that comes with SUPERCREEP’s brazen attitude and disregard for the constrictions of societal “norms”. The momentum rolls into the infectious, sounds of “Time” and the sunshine escapades of ‘Soft Summer Breakdown” only to be battered by the rantings of “The Haze”. The New York inspired “Fire Escapes” strikes to the heart of SUPERCREEP’s deft pop sensibility combining thought provoking lyrics with an emotive musical style that’s been missing in the contemporary musical landscape. Equally rewarding are the compulsive “Polite” and “Stereo”, stripping away all assumptions of where the CREEP is taking you.
While some players have strategies to their songwriting, Jody has no formula to his creative process. Like the city that inspires him, the process is random and chaotic. In the world of SUPERCREEP there are no singular boundaries with Jody’s observational lyrics affecting the listener to understand him just as he attempts to understand others: “I get obsessed with one artist at a time, and learn every song they have. I like to get inside other artists’ heads. I think that’s really important for songwriters to do…it makes you better.” With musical influences as diverse as Neil Young, Aphex Twin, and The Clash, it is no wonder that his album is as varied as the themes discussed within.
As you emerge from the dark dive bar, you realize that you can still feel and hear the sting of SUPERCREEP’s melodies forever lost in your head…
