Chances are you’ve never heard this song. Even smaller are the chances that you’ve seen this video. BUT, I bet that you know the band! Cornershop had a pretty big hit in the mid nineties with the song “Brimful of Asha”, sound familiar? You can probably sing the chorus in your head right now. In any case, Cornershop released another album in 2002 called Handcream for a Generation and it barely got any recognition outside of a few British mags, but it was actually a really good Brit-rock, psychadelic-y record. I had no idea about the album until one day about 4 years ago I was sitting watching TV on a very productive day and the video for “Lessons Learned from Rocky I to Rocky III” came on. At first I had zero clue who the band was, the video is a mashup of a bunch of footage of a (fictional?) 70’s rock band travelling around and basically acting like rock stars in the 70’s. The music accompanying the video seemed like a song from the 70’s and I wracked my brain trying to think of who it could be. When the video finally ended and it was revealed to me that Cornershop was the band I was massively confused… “You mean the Brimful of Asha dudes??”. In any case, this video/song forced me to search out the Handcream album and it was well worth it. Enjoy this cool video and greatly unappreciated song:
