Elvis Costello hand picked all 44 songs that are included on these 2 great discs. The first cd is 22 tracks of Costello’s best music from his First 10 Years as a musician and they do not dissapoint. A casual fan will find every song he could want from Costello on this disc and probably even realize that a few more are songs that he or she knew but didn’t know was Costello. The First 10 Years does a great job of showcasing the productive and powerful early years of a good musician developing into a great one. If you need a Costello album in your collection then look no further.
Not only is the Best Of a great album, but Elvis went above and beyond and chose an additional 22 tracks for a companion album appropriately called Rock and Roll Music. In this collection he’s focused on his harder rocking material that sometimes gets overlooked in favor of his more popular material. Most of the tracks are taken from albums that featured his backing band, The Attractions and the album gives listeners a fresh look at some music that casual fans might not be aware of or familiar with. Its the perfect album for someone looking to dig a little deeper into the Costello catalogue but now knowing where to start. Rock and Roll Music also includes various b-sides, live cuts, and rarities that will please fans.
Both these albums do a great job of celebrating a talented artist and some of his best works. Its nice to see some of his more obscure songs getting some love (and understanding)… ok that was lame.
