With a title like Memory Almost Full is Paul saying that he’s done with nostalgia or that he’s going after it full force? Thankfully on this album Paul mixes a bit of both. With Memory Almost Full he’s managed to craft an album that really sprinkles sounds from his entire musical career touching on the Beatles, Wings and his varied solo career almost equally. After the introspective and impressive Chaos and Creation in the Backyard from 2005, he could have either flopped horribly or built off of the success, and I think with Memory Almost Full Sir Paul has crafted one of the best albums of his solo career.
The album showcases a great balance of simple, goofier tunes with hard rocking serious songs and none really sound out of place. There’s even an Abbey Road like medley towards the middle/end of the album where shorter songs segue into one another and one can’t help but think of the Beatles. Forget all the bands getting attention for sounding “Beatle-esque” they’re all just imitators, for a taste of greatness check out this new album by someone who was actually there.
Key Tracks:
- Ever Present Past - A fun little tune with some great guitar sounds. Nostalagia central.
- Mr. Bellamy - A classic McCartney character driven some with an awesome piano line and memorable baritone vocals.
- Vintage Clothes - Goofy lyrics surrounded by a memorable melody.
- Mama Only Knows - Hard rocking Paul at his best, with a dramatic string intro.
Rating: 8.5, nicely done Paul.
