Musharraf, a key ally in America’s war against terrorism who had survived three assassination attempts by Islamic radicals in his nine years in power, finally bowed to demands to step down rather than face impeachment charges which the government had threatened this week.

In an emotional address, a grim-faced Mr Musharraf launched into a one-hour review of his achievements in power before he announced his departure.

He said that he leaves office knowing whatever he has done “was for the people and for the country”.

He added: “I hope the nation and the people will forgive my mistakes. ‘Pakistan First’ has always been my philosophy.”
