The hippie culture of love and innocence was brought to a brutal end on August 9, 1969 by Charles Manson and his Family. In an effort to ignite a race war he referred to as Helter Skelter, Manson instructed some of his followers to brutally and gruesomely murder a number of innocent people. Because some of the victims were celebrities and the violent nature of the crimes, there was a great media circus. Manson and his group were finally caught, tried and convicted, and most remain in prison to this day.
