The first stock I ever bought indirectly (I asked a friend to buy it for me as I did not have an account) was Openwave.

The first stock I bought myself, was Webex.  I remember being a sales executive and a company sending me a Webex.  I tried it and figured “this is something that Microsoft is going to buy, soon.”

The stock was around $10, with a market cap of about $1 billion.  It traded within a range of $10-20 and I ultimately sold my whopping 100 shares for a profit of a few hundred bucks.  Today the stock trades in the $40 range, with a market cap of $2.3B - and Cisco of all firms bought them for $3.2B!
