I think traditional media has lost, is losing, and will continue losing its marbles.

Mind you, what is old and new media is hard to decipher. After all, is News Corp . - with MySpace, Photobucket et al. - really all that old media? How about CBS, that has opened up its content everywhere? Indeed, some traditional media companies are adopting rather new media tactics: giving it away, hoping to make money after the fact, contenting in the meantime with branding, mindshare etc.

How new media, indeed. Today NBC took a page from CBS’ book. Problem?

It’s not just video. Print media is jumping the shark, too. I think Rupert Murdoch considering taking WSJ free is sound thinking, but look at this graph folks, from this article:

Maybe my eyesight is different, but online ads are a pittance compared to offline revenue streams for traditional media. The long term effect is that in order to remain relevant, traditional media will forego revenue, and shrink their business.

I’ve written so much about this, that I can’t even link back to the posts…

Let me clarify why Google will win here.

You run a site, it has a search function, right? Do you use the site’s search function or do you use Google to search the site. Ultimately, even by going free and making their content available to users for advertising revenue, most of these traditional media will end up losing because if 8 out of 10 websites are found via search engines, and Google accounts for 6 out of 10 searches, then you can just imagine what proportion of old media content will be found using Google.
