The Apple iPhone is yet another step towards an era where everyone in connected to everyone via portable “convergance” device. The Windows Mobile, Palm Treo, and Blackberry users have been on this bandwagon some time now. And I think the concept of being connected to the web via any and all portholes available (WiFi, Wireless 2G/3G, WiMax, Whatever) is an inevitable reality.
But as the rules and grammer of texting become more sohpisticated on our predictable text portable touchscreens, what will happen to the tone of the human voice or the bodylanguage of that person you are listening to?
I grew up/am gowing up in the “Digital Revolution” era. What was once Analogue and Real is now Digital and, well, Fake…kind of.
What was stigmatized as Hyper-Activity and Attention Deficit Disorder is now the breakneck speed at which any conversation, form of entertainmet, or dalily regiment seems to happen (at least for people young enough/too young to get The Family Guy).
So what? I mean, does it matter that the cliche that we are all able to connect virtually without actually meeting/hearing/seeing one another make any difference?
I think so. Or maybe I should say, “I feel so.” Don’t get me wrong here: I often meet, do business with, and need to know people via the Web. It is just the way of things. But I do remember a time, when I was able to forget about all of those people “out there” and the information that was relevant to my life was contained and accessed on little more than an address book and a notepad. Those, to some extent, were “the salad days.”
