A couple of years ago, after Napster had launched and been shut down, I thought of a product that would combine:
- search
- music
- ratings and reviews
- community
- micropayments
Basically, this would be an affiliate-driven music community whereby music labels would upload their releases, fans could listen to tidbits for free, buy per song or album or even entire catalogue, create playlists and recommend to others. This way, I thought, music would be recycled (ah, the purists would kill me for saying that) but the value would be incremental.
For example, say I listen to an Ozzy Osbourne tune, then buy the album. People who like what I recommend and “own” can buy it from me, and I’d get a cut for the referral, and I would pass on a cut to the label. I know it’s borderline pyramid-ish, but the idea is that the underlying payees are the ones who own the content and promote it…
All to say, this was sometime in 2002 or 2003, not exactly a time I was thinking of launching new services.
Today I read that hoooka allows something different, but somewhat similar, “Hoooka: Online portable media store allows consumers and artists to reap financial benefits from the media they create and consume.”
