] HipMojo.com » Google, “Tech” company, blasts Media project

Google is a technology company all right, but it is a master of media.  I won’t list all of the things it has done to make me say this, but today Google’s blog came out and blasted Michael Moore’s Sicko.

Firstly, as a self-labeled tech company, what on earth is Google doing offering movie reviews?

Second, and more importantly, Google sells a helluva lot of text links to corporate clients in the health space, many of whom are the very same big pharma companies that are in Moore’s cross-hairs.  As it moves into display and video ads, it knows that health will only grow as a percentage of its revenue base.  Health ranks alongside cars, entertainment, travel and finance amongst the largest categories of advertising.

Google should stick to what it knows best, being a media-agnostic tech company, if it choses to shed that image and take sides and editorialize, then it should play along all of the rules of engagement of media… and that will have a greater net effect on its bottom line than seeing a director poke fun at a major category of its advertisers.
