We’re equal parts hungry and horrified. Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for Another Top 10 Epic Man v. Food Challenges.
For this list, we’re taking a look at more of the craziest, biggest and most delicious-sounding challenges undertaken to date on “Man v. Food”.
#10: Eagle’s Challenge
Adam Richman visited Boston’s Eagle’s Deli to take on the Eagle’s Challenge. This stomach-churning event pitted the indomitable host against 5 pounds of fries and a 5-pound hamburger drenched in 2 pounds of cheese and bacon. Richman, a proud New Yorker, faced off against native Bostonian Chuck Whittall, with the loser forced to wear an “I love” t-shirt emblazoned with the winner’s city. At the time of taping, over 1,500 people had attempted the challenge, though none had the space in their stomach to complete it. Despite his best efforts, the challenge proved too much for Richman, who lost to Whittall after the latter ate 6 oz. more of his burger.
#9: The Guinness Irish Breakfast Challenge
We’re staying in New England for this next entry, which saw host Casey Webb attempting to take down the Guinness Irish Breakfast Challenge at Flann O’Brien’s Pub. The platter is not for the faint of heart, as it consists of a whopping 4.5 pounds of food, including four fried eggs, home fries, sausages, a pancake, two kinds of bread and a pint of Guinness. Tack on some bacon, black and white pudding, baked beans and fruits and veggies and you have one truly epic “Man v. Food” challenge. Webb only had 30 minutes to finish all the food in front of him, and while he managed to scarf down a large portion of it, he came up short. Hey, at least he got a free beer out of it!
#8: Hot Dogger Eating Challenge
For this Season 1 episode, Adam Richman travelled to the North Carolina Triangle to visit The Roast Grill, a family owned eatery in operation since 1940. There he took on the Hot Dogger Eating Challenge. In order to win, Richman would have to eat 17 hot dogs in under 50 minutes. However, the dogs were slathered in a pint of mustard and a pint of chili sauce; dramatically increasing the overall difficulty. Despite the smorgasbord in front of him, Richman completed the challenge in just 30 minutes! For his efforts, he earned a spot on the restaurant’s wall of fame and the right to rename the challenge as he saw fit. Unsurprisingly, he changed it to the “Man v. Food Hot Dog Challenge.”
#7: The Hawaiian Mac Daddy Pancake
For this episode, Richman faced off against M.A.C. 24/7 Bar + Restaurant’s Mac Daddy Pancake Challenge. His task was to eat a 4-pound pancake, topped with blueberries, butter and a vanilla glaze, in under 90 minutes. Additionally, he was not allowed to leave the table for any reason for the duration of the challenge. Eating 4-pounds of pancakes, each with a diameter of 14-inches, may not sound like the most difficult challenge Richman has ever faced. However, as he pointed out, most of his other challenges were not all starch. Even with coffee and bacon to help him wash it down, Richman failed to complete the challenge, coming up 1-pound short. Oh well, at least he didn’t have to eat for the rest of the day, right?
#6: Caseus Cheese Truck Challenge
Adam Richman returned to New Haven, Connecticut, the home of his alma mater Yale University, to take on the Caseus Cheese Truck Challenge. This dairy based contest required him to eat 10 grilled cheese sandwiches in an hour. Weighing in at 6-pounds, each sandwich came with a topping of Richman’s choice. Along for the ride was Yale student Ric “King Hungry VIII” Best. Both men gave it their all, downing beverages and stacking their sandwiches to help them devour the food as quickly as possible. Unfortunately for both competitors, neither could complete the challenge within the allotted time frame; and they were forced to declare food the winner.
#5: Pick Your Poison Challenge
During a visit to New York back in Season 5, Casey Webb took on the infamous Pick Your Poison Challenge at the Staten Island eatery, Lunchbox. For this one, Webb had the choice between drinking a 151-ounce milkshake, eating six deep fried chicken wings doused in habanero ghost chili extract, or attempting to throw back an 8-pound sloppy Joe affectionately called the “Motherload.” In the end, Webb went with option D, the “Death Wish.” All three options were put into a box, with one picked at random by the restaurant’s owner. Webb drew the wings and was given 10 minutes to eat them all. Incredibly, he got the job done; and at one million units of heat per wing, it was no easy feat.
#4: The Goliath Challenge
In the Ozarks to tussle with a 2.5-pound chocolate cupcake, Casey Webb appeared to have bitten off more than he could chew. The restaurant that serves this confectionary monstrosity, Kirby's Kupcakes, only allots 30 minutes for competitors to complete the challenge; which is equivalent to eating 22 regular-sized cupcakes. At Webb’s request, the cupcake was topped with a thick peanut butter and chocolate frosting. At the time of taping, only 15 people had ever completed the challenge. With the odds stacked against him, Webb somehow managed to pull it off, finishing the massive cupcake with over 4 minutes to spare. Not a bad way to earn a free t-shirt, we suppose!
#3: The Giant Banh Mi Challenge
This next challenge takes the term ‘party sub’ to a whole other level. When Casey visited Lu’s Sandwiches in Minneapolis for Season 7, he got a little more than he bargained for with the Giant Banh Mi Challenge. This 2.5 foot behemoth is stacked to the brim full of grilled pork and pickled vegetables, weighing in at nearly 4 pounds. Participants in this challenge have 30 minutes to finish it, but only 10 out of the 200 people who’ve attempted have came out on top. Despite getting through over three quarters of the sub, Casey couldn’t finish it within the 30-minute time limit. With that much bread, you can’t really blame man for losing out here.
#2: Big Badass Burrito Challenge
One of Adam Richman’s greatest “Man v. Food” accomplishments was actually a loss. In Las Vegas, Richman visited the NASCAR Café in the Sahara Hotel and Casino to do battle with a 6-pound burrito. This thing was gargantuan. It was so big in fact that only two people had ever managed to eat the entire thing in one sitting. Richman’s attempt to become the third came up short, but he had nothing to be ashamed of; as he still managed to eat 5-pounds of food in under 90 minutes. Richman buried his burrito demons the following season, when he managed to win the El Gigante Comida Challenge, eating a 4-pound burrito and a ½ pound each of mac and cheese and pudding in an hour!
Before we unveil our number one pick, here are some honorable mentions:
West End Wing King Challenge @ The West End Tavern
Boulder, Colorado
The Kitchen Sink Challenge @ San Francisco Creamery Co.
San Francisco, California
The ‘Showdown’ Challenge @ Cactus Bob’s BBQ Corral
Des Moines, Iowa
#1: Hellfire Hot Wing Challenge
Massive portions suck, but heat, is a killer. Just ask Adam Richman how he felt after completing the Hellfire Hot Wing Challenge at SmokeEaters Hot Wings in San Jose, California. The goal was to eat 12 chicken wings in 10 minutes and if Richman completed the challenge, he would then have to wait 5 minutes without the sweet relief of water or napkins. The wings, which are tossed in habanero chili sauce, are so hot that 80% of people who take on the challenge fail. The real kicker was that Richman had to lick the sauce off his fingers before he began his 5-minute wait. Richman won the challenge, but at what cost to his overall health?
