The Western Wall

Located in the Old City of Jerusalem on the west side of the Temple Mount, the Western Wall is an important Jewish religious site. Otherwise known as the Wailing Wall, it is a Jewish focal point for prayer. The wall is recognized as the last relics of the Holy Temple.

Church of the Holy Sepulcher

Also found within the walls of Jerusalem’s Old City is the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Most Christians believe this location is the site of Jesus’ crucifixion and burial, and as a result is an important pilgrimage destination. This church contains the Stone of Anointing, or the Stone of Unction, which is said to be where Jesus’ body was readied for burial.

Hanging Gardens

The Hanging Gardens of Haifa have been called the eighth wonder of the world. The gardens are one of Israel’s most visited attractions. Also known as the Baha’i Terraces, the gardens surround the golden-domed Shrine of the Bab on Mount Carmel. Hedges, flower beds and graveled paths climb the side of the mountain. The gardens also offer scenic views of the city, the Galilee Hills and the Mediterranean Sea.

While many of the country’s attractions are religious in nature, its physical beauty is another reason Israel is so popular with tourists.
