Pretty Little Liars The Perfectionists Everything We Know So Far
“Pretty Little Liars” wrapped in 2017, and ever since we’ve been desperate for more from this dark and twisty world. Welcome to MsMojo and today we’ll be discussing everything we know about “Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists” so far.
Note: The “The Perfectionists” is a sequel and a spin-off, so there will be some spoilers for the ending of “Pretty Little Liars” ahead!
“Pretty Little Liars”, based on the popular series of teen books by Sara Shepard, ran from 2010 to 2017. It followed the lives of a group of high school friends whose lives are turned upside down when one from among their midst goes missing. Not only do they begin to receive threatening messages, but they also realize there’s more than meets the eye when her body is eventually found. The show was hugely popular and spawned a spin off in 2013 called “Ravenswood”, which was set in the same universe but told a completely different story. It wasn’t very successful, and was quickly cancelled after just a season.
Fans were eager to see more from their favorite “liars” after “Pretty Little Liars” ended however, and were thrilled to learn that a new spin-off was being planned. This time, it was one that actually featured some of their favorite characters from Rosewood. “The Perfectionists” was officially picked up in May of 2018 for a 2019 release, and fans quickly had a lot of questions about what the new show would entail. March 20th was set as the date of the premiere. Luckily, anyone looking for answers could head to their local bookstore because “The Perfectionists” is another existing book by Sara Shepard. It shares a lot of similarities with the “Pretty Little Liars” series, but has many differences too. It’s set in Beacon Heights, and centers around a group of five girls being framed for a murder that they planned but didn’t actually commit. Like PLL, it’s set in a school, and contains the same amount of drama as well as twists and turns.
“The Perfectionists” book doesn’t have any direct crossover with “Pretty Little Liars”, but the series definitely will, acting as a sequel set a few years later. Most exciting for fans, is that two major players from PLL, Alison and Mona, will be primary characters in the new show, though these characters weren’t in the source material. Sasha Pieterse and Janel Parrish will be reprising their roles, and they’ll be embroiled in the action taking place in Beacon Heights. The setting of the story seems to have shifted from a high school to college, making all the characters a little older than they are in the book. Just like the book though, a young man is murdered and suspicion is quickly cast about, landing on several people who had jokingly planned to kill him. Alison has taken a job teaching at the school, and as of February 2019, we’re not exactly sure how Mona figures in to the plot.
Perhaps most importantly for fans of “Pretty Little Liars”, the developer and executive producer of the show, I. Marlene King, is back as the creator of this new show as well. That means it will inevitably retain a similar tone and style to its predecessor. According to King, the show will tell us even more about Alison, and let viewers in on how she went from a teenage mean girl to a college teacher. There were still some unanswered questions from the original show, and actress Janel Parrish has said that some of these unresolved issues will be tied up. For one thing, we don’t know what happened to Alison’s relationship with Emily and her little girls to make her uproot and move to another town.
While there will be some familiar faces from the PLL universe, there are also a lot of great new actors joining the cast. Most notable is Sofia Carson, who is best known and loved for her role in the “Descendants” movies. She’ll be playing Ava Jalali, and has expressed in interviews how excited she is to be a part of this franchise. Other notable members of the cast are Kelly Rutherford, who you may recognize from “Gossip Girl”, Sydney Park from “The Walking Dead” and Noah Gray-Cabey from “Heroes”.
We’ll have to wait until “The Perfectionists” is actually released to get all the juicy details, but for now we can read the book in anticipation, and maybe rewatch some PPL for good measure!
