Superhero Origins: Damian Wayne

Don’t get on his bad side! Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we will explore the comic book origin of Damian Wayne, son of Batman.
As with most comic book characters, there are often re-imaginations and different versions to a character’s past. We have chosen to primarily follow the storyline which unfolded in 2006’s “Batman” issues #655 to #658.

As Batman continues the fight against crime in Gotham City, Talia Al Ghul, daughter of the criminal mastermind Ra’s Al Ghul, is watching his every move with a mysterious young boy. This young boy proves to be the son of Batman himself: Damian Wayne.

Stubborn, smart, and can hold his own in any fight, Damian has proven to be a worthy addition to the Bat family despite some early growing pains. He has the brilliance of his father and the ferocity of his mother, and what he lacks in experience, he makes up for in raw talent.

After being captured by Talia’s Man-Bat soldiers, she tells the caped crusader of the night of their son’s conception when she made love to Batman after he was drugged in an experiment. This is different from 1987’s “Son of the Demon” when Batman teams up with Ra’s Al Ghul, marries Talia out of mutual love, and learns of her pregnancy before she supposedly loses the baby during a firefight. The end of the story sees a baby being dropped off for foster parents to care for, a far cry from the League of Assassins.

In this new version of events, Talia never gives up Damian and trains him under the League’s killer ways. Damian not only becomes a skilled martial artist and swordsman, but also cares little for criminal lives who he believes to be the bane of the world. With Talia leaving Damian under his father’s care, the boy would prove to be difficult for Batman and his ilk to handle. Damian would become jealous of Robin because of his close partnership with Batman and even go as far as incapacitating him. But through all the difficulties, Damian would eventually learn how to work and care for others. While he may no longer be on the path to become ruler of the world as his mother desires, he now protects the streets alongside Dick Grayson’s Batman who is set to continue the late Bruce Wayne’s work, both in protecting Gotham and teaching Damian on how to be a crime fighter.

Damian has shown proficient use in all manners of weaponry, including batarangs and swords. He is also highly intelligent, owing to his intense training with the League of Assassins and his lineage as Batman’s son and Ra’s Al Ghul’s grandson. Although he prefers working alone and likes taking matters into his own hands, Damian seems to always want to please and honour his father more than anything else. For all ofDamian’s skill, he lacks patience and discipline, which is why his mother left him with Bruce Wayne in the first place so that he could teach his son those virtues. Now Dick Grayson teaches the boy the art of patience, of stalking criminals rather than going in swords swinging. Damian’s time with the League of Assassins has given him quite an advantage in fights as they turned him into a deadly swordsmen with stellar acrobatic skills. He is also well versed in the art of stealth to sneak past his opponents making him probably the most dangerous Robin to ever take up the name. Having such incredible skill at such a young age, and having the Bat family willing to guide him in life will surely turn Damian into a formidable crime fighter in the years to come.

Young Damian has already appeared in several media outlets, including film and television. Starring in DC’s animated “Son of Batman”, the story follows Damian’s origin. He also made a TV appearance in “Batman: The Brave and The Bold”, though not as the Damian we know from the comics, but as a much tamer version and with his mother being Catwoman instead of Talia. Still, his other appearances in video games like “Injustice: Gods Among Us” where he takes up the mantle of Nightwing in an alternate dimension and “Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes” has cemented his position in the DC Universe as a force to be reckoned with.
