May your analog stick guide you. Welcome to MojoPlays and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Most Anticipated Games of May 2019.
For this list, we’re taking a look at several new games coming out in the month of May 2019.
#7: “Warhammer: Chaosbane”
Release Date: May 31, 2019
Although the Standard Edition of this action-RPG doesn’t come out until June 4, those who purchase the Digital Deluxe or Magnus Editions will be treated to early access on May 31. These versions come with a few other nice bonuses, including a gold boost, unique character emotes, and exclusive pets. Available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, the latest “Warhammer” game sets you and your allies off on a quest to rid the Old World of the Chaos hordes. Based on its private beta, many players have compared the game’s hack and slash combat to the “Diablo” series. So fans might want to check this one out … Since you don’t need a phone. ZING!
#6: “Resident Evil” games on Switch
Release Date: May 21, 2019
If you’re a “Resident Evil” fan who owns a Nintendo Switch, your life is about to be complete. 3 of the most acclaimed titles from this survival horror franchise are coming to the Switch on the exact same day. The HD Remasters for the “Resident Evil” remake and “Resident Evil Zero” will be bundled together in the “Resident Evil: Origins” Collection, or purchasable separately. While “Resident Evil 4,” arguably one of the best game into the entire series, will also be released separately. Whether you’re playing these games for the first time or just want to experience them on the go, this unholy trinity is guaranteed to deliver. Now if we could just get a Switch version of the “Resident Evil 2” remake, we’d be set.
#5: “Dollhouse”
Release Date: May 24, 2019
Showcasing elements of psychological horror and classic film noir, “Dollhouse” immediately calls the works of Stephen King to mind. The premise also sounds like a cross between Christopher Nolan’s “Memento” and “Inception,” taking us inside the mind of a detective with amnesia. Piecing together the puzzle that is her memory, the player is taken to some deeply disturbing places with a mysterious enemy on their trail. An especially creepy innovation lets the player shift to their pursuer’s perspective, making the hunt all the more personal. In addition to the solo campaign, the game’s multiplayer features 14 playable characters who all come with an individual narrative. It’s sure to be a strong contender for the most atmospheric game arriving on PS4 and PC this year.
#4: “Atelier Lulua: The Scion of Arland”
Release Date: May 21, 2019
Some JRPGs are so immersive that they actually make you feel as if you’re living in an anime world. Judging from its vibrant artwork, “The Scion of Arland” is likely to do exactly that. The 20th game in the “Atelier” franchise and the 4th game in the “Arland” subseries, the story takes place after the events of “Atelier Meruru” in a brave new world. The player follows a young alchemist named Lulua and her childhood friend Eva. With a mysterious book at her disposal, Lulua embarks on a journey in hopes making her mother proud. Hitting PS4, Steam, and Switch, the game offers the franchise’s signature blend of exploration, battle, and item crafting while also introducing a few new ingredients to the formula.
#3: “A Plague Tale: Innocence”
Release Date: May 14, 2019
The setup for “A Plague Tale: Innocence” is reminiscent of “The Last of Us,” centering on a woman named Amicia and her younger brother Hugo as they try to survive a deadly outbreak. Instead of zombies or mutants, however, the threat in this game takes a page from real-world history. Set in 1349 against the backdrop of the Hundred Years’ War and The Black Plague, Amicia must use her puzzle solving skills to keep a legion of rats away from her brother and instead drive the deadly vermin towards the knights hunting them down. With a creepy-crawly ambiance, “A Plague Tale” is the kind of game you’ll want to play on your PS4, Xbox One, or PC in the dark.
#2: “Rage 2”
Release Date: May 14, 2019
The original “Rage” was fairly well-received when it hit the scene almost a decade ago, drawing comparison to the “Borderlands,” “Fallout,” and other post-apocalyptic games. Set 30 years after its predecessor, “Rage 2” follows Walker, the last ranger who must navigate across a godforsaken open world where mutants outnumber the remaining humans. However if the trailers are anything to go by, it seems that this game is putting a strong emphasis on over-the-top action, zany weapons and crazy enemies. We do have some reservations however, due to Avalanche Studios previous title “Generation Zero.” (psst, It sucked! Like really really sucked) So you may want to check the reviews first before jumping into this wasteland.
#1: “Team Sonic Racing”
Release Date: May 21, 2019
Ok lets address the elephant in the room: Yes, we were worried about this game at the start of year, but recent trailers have shown a vast improvement in quality that now has us excited. Great job Sega. “Team Sonic Racing” seems poised to crank the high-octane action up a notch from the previous Sonic Racing titles in 2010 & 2012 respectively. Coming to the 3 major home consoles and PC, this kart racer puts an emphasis on cooperative gameplay. Instead of just coming in first, the player must work with a team of racers in order to collect the most points. It’s a unique approach that should not only distinguish “Team Sonic Racing” from “Mario Kart,” but also the upcoming “Crash Team Racing” remake. What a year to be a kart racing fan.
