Top 10 Anticipated Releases of May 2018

May the Force be with these new releases. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Anticipated Releases of May 2018.

For this list, we’re taking a look at new releases in the realms of movies, music, and video games, as well as premieres of new TV series and new seasons of ongoing series.

#10: “Conan Exiles”
Release Date: May 8, 2018

This open world adventure might be called “Conan Exiles,” but the titular barbarian doesn’t take center stage here. Rather, gamers will step into the shoes of a customizable character who Conan saves from crucifixion. From there, players must navigate across a hellish dessert known as the Exiled Lands. Originally intended to come out in 2016, “Conan Exiles” has been trekking through gaming limbo for almost two years. Based on the early access version that was released in 2017, however, it should be worth the wait.

#9: “25th Billboard Music Awards”
Release Date: May 20, 2018

As part of a multi-year contract, the Billboard Music Awards will be moving from ABC to NBC in 2018. Drake dominated last year’s show with an astounding 22 nominations and 13 wins. The 2017 ceremony also featured performances from some of the industry’s hottest modern artists, including Miley Cryrus, Lorde, and Bruno Mars, as well appearances from icons like Celine Dion and Cher. If this year’s telecast can reach the same level of quality, we can expect an electrifying night for another great year in music.

#8: “Tell Me How You Really Feel” by Courtney Barnett
Release Date: May 18, 2018

Courtney Barnett earned a Grammy nomination for her first solo album, “Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit.” The Australian musician gave fans a taste of her follow-up album online, sharing brief segments of new songs. Since then, Barnett has released full versions of the singles “Need a Little Time” and “Nameless, Faceless,” both of which encompass her signature deadpan delivery and quirky wit. We can’t wait to tell Barnett how we really feel about the whole track list.

#7: “Sweetbitter” – Season 1
Release Date: May 6, 2018

If you’ve been waiting for a special occasion to open that bottle of wine, we have just the show for you! This adaptation of Stephanie Danler’s debut novel seems like another winner for Starz, the same network behind hits like “American Gods” and “Outlander.” Ella Purnell plays Tess, a young woman trying to make it as a waitress while adjusting to big city life. With Danler returning as a writer, the series will likely satisfy anyone with a taste for something poignant, darkly humorous, and of course bittersweet.

#6: “7” by Beach House
Release Date: May 11, 2018

Beach House spent eleven months carefully crafting their seventh studio album, which is simply titled “7.” The dream pop band described their previous album as a way of “cleaning out the closet,” paving the way for “a new creative process” that’ll bring about “rebirth and rejuvenation.” Through singles like “Lemon Glow” and “Dive,” the group has aimed to capture “the beauty that arises in dealing with darkness.” From what we’ve heard already, it’s safe to say that “7” will be a lucky number.

#5: “Detroit: Become Human”
Release Date: May 25, 2018

Through titles like “Heavy Rain” and “Beyond: Two Souls,” developer Quantic Dream blurred the line between video games and movies, delivering unique experiences that were both interactive and cinematic. David Cage returns to direct this action-adventure, which centers on three androids trying to find their places in the world. The fate of these characters relies on the player’s choices, as the story will continue whether they live or die. With themes regarding artificial intelligence and free will, “Detroit: Become Human” could deliver a think piece unlike any other.

#4: “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” – Season 4, Part 1
Release Date: May 30, 2018

Our favorite Mole Woman is back with a batch of wacky new adventures, and just in time to qualify for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards. The only downside to Kimmy’s return is that we’re only getting six new episodes this month with the second half of Season 4 being released later in 2018. It’s too bad we can’t binge the entire season at once. If Kimmy has taught us anything, though, it’s that when life gives you lemons, make waffles… er, we mean lemonade.

#3: “Dark Souls: Remastered”
Release Date: May 25, 2018

From “Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze,” to “Little Nightmares,” to “Hyrule Warriors,” several acclaimed games are finally making their way to the Nintendo Switch this month. “Dark Souls” is the one we’re looking forward to revisiting the most, however. Also coming to the PS4, Xbox One, and Windows, this remaster will allow six players with dedicated servers to play at a time. The game will also get some tweaking in the graphics and frames-per-second departments, but don’t expect the difficulty to start showing any mercy.

#2: “Solo: A Star Wars Story”
Release Date: May 25, 2018 [U.S.]

Of all the modern “Star Wars” movies, “Solo” has arguably sparked the most trepidation amongst fans. This standalone film has endured a troubled production, with Ron Howard replacing Phil Lord and Christopher Miller as director after only a few months of filming. That underwhelming title and the mixed reception to “The Last Jedi” doesn’t help either. That being said, it’s a Han Solo origin story! How can we not be excited? The odds might be one in a million, but we’re still confident that Han will shoot first.

#1: “Deadpool 2”
Release Date: May 18, 2018 [U.S.]

With its constant fourth wall breaks and unapologetic R rating, the original “Deadpool” was a game-changer for superhero movies. While it’s hard to imagine “Deadpool 2” being as fresh or influential, the previews suggests that the sequel will be another hilarious, action-packed, and self-aware ride. Seeing Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool cross paths with Josh Brolin’s Cable should be a highlight of the movie, assuming the filmmakers can finish the visual effects in time. If not, we’d still be down for a feature-length “Toy Story” reenactment.
