Johnny’s search for his surrogate son Miguel takes him to an underground fight club. But the sensei can’t get to his student without facing off against the Wolf in front of a crowd. During this entertaining encounter, an announcer provides enthusiastic and funny commentary. Seeing how Johnny’s karate fares against the Wolf’s mixed martial arts style is also a great highlight. It all leads up to a fantastic finish. After The Wolf cheats by having someone hold the sensei in place, Johnny returns the favor by using a hot pepper his son Robby had to get the upper hand. While it may not be the most honorable victory, no one said there were any rules for this public bout.
Devon was hungry to beat Tory after suffering a crushing loss to the Cobra Kai student at the All Valley. That’s why sparks flew when the two of them were tested by Sensei Kim. Although Tory initially pulls her punches, she’s encouraged to let loose and show Devon what she’s made of. It’s easy to feel the intensity of their rivalry radiating through the screen as they trade blows. Their test becomes even more pulse-pounding as Tory starts pulling ahead of her opponent. Although Devon ultimately couldn’t keep up, their match was still thrilling. Both of them proved that they had the killer instinct to be Cobra Kais.
After Chozen tried to slay Daniel Larusso in a heated fight, Mike Barnes nearly broke the Miyagi-Do student completely. So, we never thought we’d see the day where both big bads were actually friendly with the former Karate kid. It’s a shame the two reformed villains weren’t so kind to each other after a misunderstanding leads to a heated fight. Although their duel is brief, it was a masterstroke to pit two “Karate Kid” movie big bads against each other. On top of that, it’s hilarious to see Daniel try to get the duo to talk things out before they can break more furniture. We’re glad they were able to cool down before the situation got more out of hand than it already was.
Shortly after a group of four scammers tries to steal from Johnny, one of the men attempts to sneak up on him. Luckily, Robby jumps in to help his dad take them down. It’s immensely satisfying watching the duo take down the men who scammed Miguel. None of the crooks stand a chance against the father and son’s blended fighting styles. And although the ringleader tries to use a surfboard as a weapon, Johnny destroys it with one epic kick. This matchup also marks the first time the Eagle Fang sensei fought alongside his son. It was a treat to see how far their relationship had come and see a great fight at the same time.
When an inmate pushes Kreese over the edge, the seasoned vet shows all the prisoners why you shouldn’t get on his bad side. Before the free-for-all begins, actor Martin Kove is replaced by Barrett Carnahan, who plays the Cobra Kai sensei in flashbacks. This brilliant swap captures how young and powerful Kreese feels as he charges into battle. Although he’s absolutely brutal to the other inmates, we can’t help but cheer every time he takes someone down. We never thought we’d root for this notorious villain. But if Kreese keeps providing high quality fight scenes like this, we may start campaigning for the sensei to get an early release.
Chozen and Johnny showed up at a Cobra Kai dojo in the hopes of confronting the big bad. Instead, they find a new sensei and one hell of a fight. During this fast paced and well choreographed battle, the mystery fighter is able to take Johnny to the ground with ease. And even the experienced Chozen can’t afford to let up for a second. When the two heroes ultimately decide to combine forces against their foe, the fight reaches a new level of awesome. We never expected two of Daniel’s rivals to work so well together against a common enemy. Their thrilling collaboration also made it clear that Cobra Kai’s new senseis were not to be taken lightly.
The sinister Silver manages to slither right under Daniel’s skin and goad the hero into a desperate duel. While the Miyagi-Do sensei tries a flurry of offensive moves, none of them phase his enemy for long. Unfortunately, Silver also knows how to break right through Daniel’s defensive moves too. It quickly becomes painfully obvious that the Cobra Kai sensei has his enemy right where he wants him. Although it was hard to watch Silver dismantle Daniel, their clash’s high stakes and surprising turns made it impossible to look away until the Miyagi-Do sensei fell. The crushing ending made us hungry to see the day that Daniel beats Silver down in a rematch.
At the beginning of season 5, Chozen attempts to infiltrate Cobra Kai by applying to be one of its new senseis. But after Silver sees through this deception, he sends six fighters after the hero. It was almost tragic to see how unfair the fight was…for the group of senseis. Chozen absolutely decimates every single man who dares to challenge him. He becomes a living whirlwind of one shot takedowns, crushing blows and skillful karate moves. This uneven matchup established that Chozen has only become sharper with age. Hearing him finish the fight with one of the greatest threats in franchise history was the icing on top of this tremendous scene.
Three senseis, two dojos and a bunch of students needed Sam to win a pivotal fight against Devon in order to strike a heavy blow against Cobra Kai. Although the young Larusso impressively held her own against her foe, a corrupt referee kept ruling against her. The high stakes and unfair circumstances only pushed Sam to kick things into a new gear. Watching her go from failing to dominating her enemy was breathtaking. Since Sam’s technique was so clean and strong, the ref had no choice but to award her the three points she needed. Her overwhelming victory and the weight it carried made this fight into one of the season’s brightest bouts.
Before we reveal our high flying top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
Nearly two seasons after Robby seriously injured Miguel in the shocking school fight, the duo finally squared up for a rematch. There’s no points, no rules and no stopping until they’ve burned through all the bad blood between them. The fight features excellent choreography and emotional performances. Having Miguel repeat the same series of moves that lead to his harrowing fall against Robby was a particularly outstanding creative choice. In the end, the former All-Valley champ decides to call the fight before it goes too far. His decision to show mercy brought their feud and this great grudge match to a beautiful conclusion.
