Welcome to TopX, the show where we countdown the good, the bad and the ugly of YouTube. Today we’re taking a look at the top 10 horror story narrators on YouTube.
For this list, we’re looking at the best channels for telling scary stories; don’t turn out the lights for this one.
We all love a good creepypasta – they’re one of the best and most interesting examples of viral internet content, with famous figures like Slender Man and Jeff the Killer originating from this corner of the web. So any YouTube channel dedicated to compiling creepypastas and building on their innate entertainment value with high-quality narration is welcome. Most of MrCreepyPasta’s videos are dedicated to going through one creepy story in more detail, and he even has whole playlists about certain creepypasta figures. If you want something a bit more engaging than a story, he’s done video game content as well, live-streaming games like “Until Dawn.”
There are a lot of things that make Lazy Masquerade unique in the horror YouTube scene. The most obvious of these is the strange mask he uses as his icon, which is different from some of the standard horror imagery other channels sometimes use, and is a distinct object in its own right. He’s also English, which could give him an edge over the many North American narrators because it’s something a bit different for listening to. Though he still follows the trend of finding scary stories on the internet, they have an original slant; these are videos about specific regions and countries, for example. So you can find something frightening about the place where you live.
Of course, there won’t just be one YouTuber dedicated to exploring creepypastas – they are the bread and butter of online horror, after all. CreepsMcPasta reads out things he finds on the internet, but one of the most unique things about him is he also writes his own creepypastas and uploads them to YouTube. While admitting he wrote them does take away some of the ambiguity that makes creepypastas so good – are they true or not? – it also paints him as an especially talented creator. He’s built up so much content that he broadcasts a 24/7 stream on YouTube, fulfilling all your horror needs.
Snarled is a YouTube channel which produces a lot of content, but by far the most successful series is “Something Scary” These horror videos take user submissions and turn them into eerie animations. They have a variety of different hosts and stand out from the crowd by providing simple but compelling cartoons to go along with the narrative. If you want something to watch rather than just listening, “Something Scary” is definitely a good series to check out, and they have over a hundred separate episodes. The stories range from folkloric fables to internet myths.
Where some channels try to improve on the “horror story” formula with better visuals, Being Scared goes the distance to add extra layers of atmosphere to the content he makes. Many of his most popular videos feature a “rainy night” theme, where he tells his tale against the background of a heavy rainstorm with footage to match. This is certainly a good way to get the adrenaline flowing. Rain isn’t the only ambient sound he uses; he has other videos with a crackling fire in the background. Plus, the extreme length of some of them, with long story compilations, make it easy to get lost for hours on this channel.
A vivid thumbnail is one of the best ways to draw in users and is something Let’s Read! excels at, with unique imagery and art gracing the channel homepage. But obviously people don’t stay just for the thumbnails; the actual content is just as good as you’d be led to believe. Let’s Read! uses slightly different topics than you may expect, too, like “Scary Corner Store Stories” and “Scary Garbage Man Stories,” that you might not find on similar channels. They also have a big repertoire of stories about stalkers, as well as historical tales, like the disappearance of the Mary Celeste’s crew.
The dulcet tones of Doctor Horror are enough to keep you awake all night if that’s what you want, relating a wide range of disturbing stories to grace your ears. He has a diverse array of content and goes further where creepypastas are concerned; rather than just explain the legend of Slender Man again, he has videos detailing encounters that people claim to have had with Slender Man. His most popular videos focus on technology, including countdowns of uncomfortable emergency services calls and online stalkers, but he’s also done a few documentary-style videos deep-diving into true crime.
When it comes to narration, the voice is definitely important, and Be. Busta’s Australian accent puts him a cut above the rest. If what you really want is a source for all the scariest stories found on Reddit – a seemingly infinite source of them, and with high production values – his channel is the place to be. Despite suffering greatly because of the adpocalypse, Be. Busta does still update regularly to YouTube. He also does lots of live horror streams on Twitch in case you want to interact with him directly while he reads.
Inspired by some of the other people on this list to try his hand at eerie narration, Corpse Husband quickly rose to prominence in the horror community. He often avoids creepypastas and folklore, instead often using “true” stories as his flagship content. Often, these stories are provided by his own subscriber base, making his channel a truly collaborative effort between viewer and creator. He tells a lot of stories centered around the internet itself, like frightening tales from Tinder and an incredibly viral video about computer hacking. Allegedly he looks a lot like his channel icon, but we may never know for sure.
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few Honorable Mentions:
Unit #522
Mr Spooky
The Grim Reader
Swamp Dweller
Lady White Rabbit
He’s everything you could want from a good horror narrator. Where others in this genre have a particular niche – compiling spooky videos, searching for stories on Reddit, etc. – Mr.Nightmare has some of the most diverse horror content of any channel. He does have the standard types of video we all like to indulge in, like the worst-case scenarios when using Craigslist, but also talks about folklore and releases countdowns of genuinely frightening, supernatural clips. To make him even more enigmatic, almost nothing is known about Mr.Nightmare beyond his name; no one knows a thing about his life, where he lives, or what does during his time away from YouTube.
