#10: The Guest Dalek
“The Big Fat Anniversary Quiz” (2015)
Plenty of British celebs, reality stars and famous faces from all around the world have appeared on the Big Fat Quiz, but no-one has quite received the reception given to Doctor Who’s The Spawn of Davros. Invited along to ask the final question and to add a little sizzle to the tail end of the 2015 show, the Dalek proved hilariously deadpan and comically true to its non-compromising alien roots. The visitor from Skaro meets Jack Whitehall's curiosity with frank and straightforward replies, but when Jack's query about its TV work prompts Jimmy Carr to joke that it was appearing on the next “8 Out of 10 Cats”, the Dalek answers with arguably the line of the night.
#9: Mel B & the Spice Girls Lyrics
“The Big Fat Quiz of the Year” (2014)
Mel B didn't exactly endear herself to the Big Fat panel when she took part in the 2014 edition. Falling out with just about everyone at least once and having an on-again-off-again turbulent relationship with her teammate Micky Flanagan, Mel played through the quiz in permanent state of moody confusion. As a result, Scary Spice was often the butt of the joke, if not the joke itself, with one moment sticking out above all others. When the panel bombards her with a string of Spice Girls lyrics, she seems at a loss for how to react. Still, she couldn't have been really bothered since she didn't say ‘goodbye’, but was it what she wanted, what she really, really wanted?
#8: Jon Snow's Hotline Bling
“The Big Fat Quiz of the Year” (2015)
If there's one thing that we've definitely learned from the Big Fat Quiz, it's that newsreader Jon Snow is totes up on his pop music and club bangers. That, and the man can boogie. Hip, jive, fly, funky, and downright with it, Snow busts all the moves and patents a few new ones in the answer clip for Drake's “Hotline Bling”. Is it the fact that he’s suited and booted? Or that he looks as though he’s only just finished filming? No one can be sure. The charts prove nothing and the stats are meaningless when it comes to explaining the genius behind this dance.
#7: Sean Lock and Child Actors
“The Big Fat Quiz of the Year” (2008)
Kids acting out one of the year’s big news stories is a regular feature on Big Fat Quiz. And while a polite, well-adjusted adult knows to encourage them even if the likeness isn’t spot on, Sean Lock calls it like it is. When the Children of Mitchell Brook Primary School play through Paul McCartney's divorce, Sean lays down a line of brutal criticism, claiming that in his view, the story had “too much grit” for the young’ens. When Davina McCall interrupts and points out that the students are likely watching, Lock doubles down and discourages the lot of them from ever pursuing a life in the performing arts. ‘Harsh’ doesn’t do it justice.
#6: Chris the Fly
“The Big Fat Anniversary Quiz” (2015)
Fans of the show know to expect ‘unexpected’ guests throughout the quiz. Sometimes these guests ask topical questions, other times they are the question. And then there's Chris the Fly, who was... well, it was a fly. With the Goth Detectives reunited for one last case and openly cheating throughout, Russell Brand and Noel Fielding become increasingly detached from the game in order to tend to the buzzing insect, which they set free in the hope of winning a big points pay-out. Noel recaptures the fly later in proceedings, or at least claims to, and alleges it’s the same creature as from earlier in the show. But how does he know? Because they’re on first name terms, of course.
#5: The Dress
“The Big Fat Quiz of the Year” (2015)
The fuel for heated Facebook exchanges, office disputes, fist fights, awkward family dinners and full-on arguments, that dress divided the world in 2015. Did you see blue and black, or were you just wrong? It was this generation’s moon landing! (OK, maybe that’s a bit strong). But anyway, David Mitchell and Rob Brydon waded into the age-old debate, with Mitchell’s orderly, pedantic, logic-driven mind seeing blue, and he wouldn't have it any other way. But Brydon, even with the actual dress in the actual room where he’s actually sitting, just can't accept that it’s not white and gold. Rather than admit he is wrong, or at least that he sees it differently, Rob insists there is trickery afoot.
#4: Turkey Sandwiches & Noel and Dara's One Night Stand at Glastonbury
“The Big Fat Quiz of the Year” (2013)
In 2012 Jack Whitehall and James Corden ordered in pizza during the show. The following year, Jonathan Ross decided that for his mid-quiz feast he’d bring along his Christmas dinner leftovers. But when he hands out hand-pressed turkey sandwiches, the show completely falls apart. First of all, it's suggested that Dara Ó Briain would look like Gru from “Despicable Me” if he were to don Noel Fielding's coat; he does so, and does indeed. What follows is Dara and Noel crashing on the steps of the set and drifting into the surreal notion of two strangers having a reluctant comedown at a festival, while Jimmy valiantly tries to keep quizzing around them.
#3: “Have You Got an Eyepatch On?”
“The Big Fat Quiz of the '00s” (2012)
Dubbing themselves “The Indoor Kites”, and later rebranding as “Hot Shame”, Richard Ayoade and Noel Fielding were, almost by default, the most fashionable team on the panel in 2012. While Richard wore a flashy suit and tie, Noel stayed en vogue with a leather aviator jacket and a fedora complete with bunny ears. Mid-quiz, possibility out of boredom, possibly to make life difficult for the show’s continuity editor, Noel opted to accessorize his look with a well-placed eyepatch. And when Jimmy attempts to address the obvious, Noel replies with refined and definitive, top level sarcasm.
#2: Frank Skinner's Joke from Birmingham
“The Big Fat Anniversary Quiz” (2007)
Ordinarily, Frank Skinner is treated with the esteem entitled to a casually charming West Midlands comic. But when he brings one of his most cherished jokes on to the Big Fat Quiz he sees the panel rip it to shreds, no matter how much Ozzy Osbourne had enjoyed it ten years ago. David Mitchell and Richard Ayoade mercilessly pull the gag apart, while Jimmy backs them up. Frank does get some sincere laughs, but then David steps in again to question the level of sex-ed in Birmingham, while Richard remains hung up on the idea of her Majesty on the prowl.
Before we unveil our top pick here are a few honourable mentions.
Jimmy's Mum
“The Big Fat Quiz of the '00s” (2012)
Posh Wank
“The Big Fat Quiz of the Year” (2012)
“I Look Like His Legal Adviser”
“The Big Fat Quiz of the Year” (2013)
#1: Richard Ayoade’s Banana
“The Big Fat Quiz of the Year” (2014)
Setting the tone of her 2014 visit early, today’s top spot involves Mel B, as she’s confused, bemused, and dumbfounded by Richard Ayoade eating a banana. For apparently unknown reasons, Mel takes objection to Richard’s consumption of the fruit, which only calls Ayoade’s wit into action. The audience loves it, but Scary Spice just isn’t on board. Later, with Richard on his second banana of the evening, Mel labels the whole thing ‘weird’ and ‘disturbing’, at which point Richard puts down his snack and changes the narrative, implying that the '90's sex symbol was actually uncomfortably aroused. For the first time all show, Mel’s left speechless.
