Top 10 Biggest Stories from Gamescom

Another year, another Gamescom. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the top ten biggest stories from Gamescom 2017.

For this list, we’ll be looking at what we consider to be the most interesting announcements from this year’s Gamescom.

#10: “Dishonored: Death of the Outsider” Gameplay

The first two “Dishonored” games were stellar releases, despite “Dishonored 2” suffering from some major issues upon its PC release. However, Arkane Studios isn’t done just yet, as they’re releasing a complete standalone expansion for the series, titled “Dishonored: Death of the Outsider,” on September 15. In the game, you play as Billie Lurk, and it looks to be every bit as fun, complex, and beautiful as the previous games. Many journalists present at Gamescom were able to try the game out for themselves, and judging by the footage, it looks damn good. Let’s just hope it has a smooth launch.

#9: “Super Mario Odyssey” Gameplay

“Super Mario Odyssey” is set to release on October 27, and if these gameplay reveals and trailers are anything to go on, it looks like it will be another notch in the Switch’s small-but-stellar library of games. For Nintendo’s presentation, the game’s producer, Yoshiaki Koizumi, took the stage to discuss the upcoming title before we were treated to some new gameplay. We got a look at a brand new, never-before-seen area called Luncheon Kingdom, which is inspired by European culture. From what we’ve seen so far, this game looks both beautiful and inventive, and we can’t wait to get our hands on it.

#8: “Overwatch’s” Junkertown

“Overwatch” has remained incredibly popular ever since it was released last year, and for good reason; the gameplay is fun and addictive, and there have been countless updates to keep the gameplay fresh. Enter Junkertown, a stunning new map which has been unveiled by Blizzard. Junkertown is set in the Australian outback, home of Junkrat and Roadhog, and is a huge change of pace from the maps we’ve grown used to. While no release date has been set, we can look forward to this map in the near future.

#7: “Biomutant”

While gameplay reveals and new maps are nice, that’s nothing compared to an entirely new game! “Biomutant” is the first game from Experiment 101, a development team consisting of previous Avalanche Studios employees: the team behind “Just Cause” and “Mad Max.” The game is set in an open world, and you play as a racoon-looking-thing which has mutant powers and bionics. The game was available to play at Gamescom, and judging by the gameplay footage, it looks like a ton of fun: you can control a hand-shaped tank, a mech, a glider, and a jet ski, all within stunning environments. Count us in.

#6: “Final Fantasy XV” Is Coming to PC

Yes, for all you PC gamers who felt left out, rest assured: “Final Fantasy XV” is finally coming to PCs, and it looks fantastic. The game was initially released on consoles in November 2016, but a PC release was nowhere in sight. Thankfully at this year’s Gamescom, it was finally announced that a PC release was set for early 2018. The PC release will contain mod support and a brand new first-person mode. Good things come to those who wait, indeed.

#5: New “Battlefield 1” Mode

“Battlefield 1” was an enormous success upon its release in October 2016, as it brought multiplayer to the trenches of World War I, and did it in spectacular style. Well, EA DICE isn’t done yet, as they unveiled a new game mode called Incursions at Gamescom, and it looks great. While “Battlefield” is well-known for its large-scale skirmishes, Incursions will see only ten players in a given match, making for much more intimate and personal battles. The closed alpha is set to release in September, and it promises to an excellent addition to an already stellar game.

#4: “Star Wars Battlefront II” Starfighter Assault Mode

The first “Star Wars Battlefront” was a bit of a disappointment in the content department. However, this sequel looks to be bigger and much better than the original, complete with a new Starfighter Assault mode, which sees up to 24 players dogfighting in space. At Gamescom, viewers were treated to some gameplay footage, and a few lucky ones were able to try the game out for themselves. The game is a visual marvel, complete with detailed explosions, colourful lasers zipping through the air, and a framerate which remains solid, even amongst the frantic action. This is sure to be a dream come true for many “Star Wars” fans.

#3: Xbox One X

Perhaps the biggest draw of this year’s Gamescom was Microsoft’s conference centering on the Xbox One X, and it didn’t disappoint. To start, it was announced thatover 100 games are being enhanced for the Xbox One X, with many running at 4K resolution. Microsoft also unveiled a limited edition Project Scorpio version of the console, and its aesthetics are beautiful and enticing. Also, pre-orders were finally opened for the console, which is sure to raise its hype to unseen levels. The Xbox One X is set to release on November 7, and we can’t wait to see everyone’s reactions.

#2: “Jurassic World Evolution”

Have you ever sat down to watch a Jurassic Park movie, only to become hyper-aware of how poorly the parks are managed. How do these Dinos keep getting loose? Well, now’s your chance to prove that you could do a better job. “Jurassic World Evolution,” a new game unveiled at Gamescom by Frontier Developments, will allows you to take control of your very own Jurassic park. The game is set to coincide with the new film’s release in 2018, and it allows players to manage their own research facilities, dinosaur exhibits, and concession stands. Oh, and you can also engineer entirely new dinosaur breeds. Just make sure to keep your subjects contained.

#1: “Age of Empires IV” Announcement and Teaser

The “Age of Empires” series has been going strong since 1997, offering players a unique RTS experience and paving the way for countless successors. The games have taken players on a unique tour throughout history, ranging from the Stone Age to the early modern period, and while the series has ventured into the free-to-play model recently, it looks to be going back to its roots with this fourth instalment. While not much is known about the game, it’s freaking “Age of Empires,” so of course it’s going to be good. It was unexpected, but it’s certainly welcome.
