Top 10 Celebrities Who Quit Twitter

Twitter can be a very toxic place, and sometimes it’s just too much to handle. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the top 10 celebrities who quit Twitter.

Yes, we know that most of these celebrities have since come back to Twitter, but this list is based on celebrities who took a break at some point. We’ll be looking at both why they left, and the impact it had on the public.

#10: Lena Dunham

You definitely know her: actress, writer, producer, and director. If you don’t know her for work on the small screen, you probably have read something she’s said on Twitter. After posting what she intended to be a body positive photo in a sports bra and her boyfriend’s boxers on Instagram, she received a ton of hate messages. Bodyshamers were quick to turn the comment section into a warzone debating women’s bodies. When asked about it, Dunham said that because she was wearing boxers, her Instagram page turned into a “rabid, disgusting debate” filled with misogynists. Because of all this negativity, Dunham ended up removing herself from Twitter rather than Instagram, however, she has since returned.

#9: Lily Allen

Lily Allen seems to be in an on-again/off-again relationship with Twitter. After essentially calling herself anti-technology, Allen first left the platform in 2009 because she wanted privacy. In an interview about the incident, she said, “My boyfriend gets really angry. He's like: 'I want to spend some time with you, do we have to have one and a half million people in the room with us?” Another time, she quit Twitter because of a racist tweet regarding a rumor that she was adopting a child. Most recently, after photos of her being carried by her boyfriend due to collapsing from a day of drinking surfaced on the Internet, Sheezus herself decided it was time for another break.

#8: Chris Brown

Whatever your opinion may be on him, it seems like not a day can go by without Chris Brown getting into some kind of trouble. Whether you think he’s a changed man or he’s still the same hot-tempered guy he always was, Chris Brown still catches flack for his famous domestic violence case where he beat his then-girlfriend, Rihanna. After one too many jabs about the incident, Chris took to Twitter to blast comedian Jenny Johnson. After a lengthy back-and-forth between the two, Chris deleted his account, but in typical Chris Brown fashion, he had to get the last word saying, “Let me leave this bitch alone...It's good to know my worth by listening to a bitch that is worthless!”

#7: Emma Roberts

Do you know how you can be killed for wearing the wrong colour in some areas? Well, remember when the same could happen if you rooted for the wrong Twilight fandom? That’s essentially what happened to Emma Roberts. While on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, seated next to Robert Pattinson, she said she was Team Jacob. After the show, Emma took to Twitter and wrote, “Rob Pattinson is so nice! I was slightly disappointed his skin wasn’t glittering and the song "Wild Thing" didn’t start when he shook my hand.”  Members of Team Edward weren’t pleased and they bombarded Roberts’ twitter. Shortly after, she deleted her page.

#6: Alec Baldwin

Hey guys, Alec Baldwin’s just like all of us! Okay minus the multi-millionaire status, Alec Baldwin’s just like all of us! He loves iPhone games. While onboard a plane during an intense game of Words with Friends, Baldwin was told to shut off his phone, but he refused. Before being kicked off the flight, he fled to the bathroom with his phone and continued his game there. After a hefty rant on Twitter, Baldwin deleted his account. Another time, Baldwin felt his wife was being personally attacked by a writer, for allegedly tweeting while at friend James Gandolfini’s funeral. He went on a hilarious Twitter rampage which ended with him tweeting, “Now f--k this twitter + good luck to all of you who know the truth.”

#5: Iggy Azalea
You ever just come home and realize everything has gone wrong? Well, that’s what happened to Iggy Azalea after returning from an amazing vacation in Hawaii. Not long after her public Twitter dispute with Papa John’s Pizza, paparazzi photos of the Fancy rapper showing off her figure in a bikini leaked, and almost instantly, Iggy Iggs became the subject of tons of hate and body shaming for not being what the Internet considers beautiful. After putting the haters in their place, Iggy left the Twitterverse with one last statement saying, “The Internet is the ugliest reflection of man kind there is.”

#4: Amanda Bynes

It’s obvious that 140 characters may limit how well we express ourselves, but to Amanda Bynes, that was no challenge. During her legendary Twitter meltdown, she gave us many memorable gems. Eventually she stopped tweeting altogether, which made us all collectively scratch our heads because she was on such a hot streak. Eventually it was revealed that she was seeking treatment for mental health issues. Although she has since come back to Twitter, she is nowhere near as active as she was during that whole disaster. However, that’s probably for the better.

#3: Zayn Malik

One Direction’s bad boy superstar Zayn Malik quit Twitter after his page became the target of anti-Muslim slurs. Many were claiming he wasn’t a true Muslim because of his tattoos, and because he was planning on touring during Ramadan. Others were simply leaving hateful comments just for the sake of it. Eventually he quit Twitter, and it’s understandable that he couldn’t take the negativity. Before leaving he wrote, “The reason I don't tweet as much as I use to, is because I'm sick of all the useless opinions and hate that I get daily, goodbye twitter.” Zayn came back within two days however, saying that he didn’t want to leave his fans behind.

#2: Adele

Just minutes after the birth of her son, trolls of the Internet were quick to do what they do best, which is harass people for no good reason. She and her son received multiple death threats, all of them were probably weightless, but they were still very alarming. Obviously overwhelmed with juggling just giving birth to a baby and all the hate her and her family had just received, the “Hello” singer said goodbye to twitter. After it all died down, she came back to Twitter, but it seems like her account is now mostly run by her team.

Before we reveal our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.

Nick Offerman

James Franco

John Mayer

#1: Kanye West

Outspoken, opinionated, and undoubtedly honest, Kanye West is a man of, what seems to be, little mystery. However, like he always does, Kanye proves us wrong. Deleting any traces of ever having a Twitter account, Kanye left his fans with one cryptic message: “BE BACK SOON.” Keeping his promise, Yeezus rose after just… two days? No reason for his hiatus has been given, and some fans are still wondering to this day. Some say he did it for attention, or to feed his ego. Or maybe he just wanted to clean up the Twitter feed? Whatever the reason may be, Kanye has never been a stranger to eccentric behaviour, and this incident further proves that.
