#10: “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” (2005)

When people think of “The Chronicles of Narnia,” it’s the Pevensie children’s initial trip to the mystical realm that instantly comes to mind. That’s mainly because the story encompasses the franchise’s three greatest icons: A lion, a wardrobe, and of course a witch - a White Witch that’s played to chilling perfection by Tilda Swinton in this 2005 adaptation. Considering that C.S. Lewis’ crowning achievement is practically religious text in fantasy circles, it’s no surprise Andrew Adamson’s film became an overnight classic by capturing the timeless tale’s depth and enchantment.

#9: “Hocus Pocus” (1993)

If you grew up in the ‘90s, “Hocus Pocus” is a film you likely revisit every Halloween. It’s full of quintessential elements we associate with the season like trick-or-treating, black cats, and the town of Salem. Most importantly, this comedy comes complete with a trio of eccentric witches that wish to retrieve their spell book from some meddling kids. Seeing how our heroes are mostly virgins, though, they should all make it to the end. With creativity, goofy humor, and more edge than typical Disney fare, it’s a candle well worth lighting.

#8: “Practical Magic” (1998)

Sisterhood is a common theme in movies about witches. Witchcraft aside, the sisterly bond Sandra Bullock’s Sally and Nicole Kidman’s Gillian share in “Practical Magic” is one of cinema’s most bewitching. Part of that’s because the chemistry between these actresses is so strong and believable. Written as human beings first and witches second, neither of their personalities is governed by their heritage. The two make for a magnificent pair in a film that blends romantic comedy with dark comedy, amounting to a combination as sinfully delicious as chocolate cake for breakfast.

#7: “The Craft” (1996)

Essentially “Charmed” meets “Clueless,” “The Craft” presents witchcraft in a hip, late 20th century light with a punk attitude. The film centers on four gothic Catholic schoolgirls that discover the black magic inside them. They use their powers to get revenge on those who have done them wrong. What goes around comes around, but karma comes around yet again in this case. Consumed by ego, guilt, and inner demons, the teenage witches spiral out of control. A cautionary tale, “The Craft” advocates that you should be careful what you wish for.

#6: “Bedknobs and Broomsticks” (1971)

Often overshadowed by big sister “Mary Poppins,” “Bedknobs and Broomsticks” still stands out as one of Disney’s most sensational live-action fantasies. Angela Lansbury was born to play a witch and she creates one of her most illustrious characters in Miss Price. She hits just the right note of being dignified while also being whimsical and occasionally absentminded. Equally outstanding is David Tomlinson as a charismatic conman who discovers magic is the real deal. Their chemistry is nothing short of spellbinding, as are the film’s music, choreography, effects, and locations.

#5: “The Witches” (1990)

If you’re looking for a genuinely petrifying PG movie, “The Witches” will definitely grant your heart’s desire. The last film Jim Henson personally contributed to, this adaptation of Roald Dahl’s novel is naturally ample in beguiling puppets, animatronics, and practical effects. Stealing the show is Anjelica Huston as the Grand High Witch, who manages to be frightening while also being a ton of fun. That actually sufficiently sums up the whole movie, which will appeal to the child in all of us that gets a kick out of being scared.

#4: “The Witches of Eastwick” (1987)

Directed by the always-entertaining George Miller, “The Witches of Eastwick” centers on three women who dream of being swept off their feet. Their dreams come true, or perhaps their nightmares come true, when Daryl Van Horne arrives in town. The film succeeds thanks to its exceptional ensemble, which includes Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer. As for Jack Nicholson, he can do no wrong, especially in a juicy role like this. Throw in some great one-liners and you have a wicked comedy that empowers women in a dance with the devil.

#3: “Kiki’s Delivery Service” (1989)

One of Hayao Miyazaki’s most delightful films, “Kiki’s Delivery Service” follows a thirteen-year-old witch who starts a delivery business in a city by the sea. Desiring to be accepted for who she is rather than what she is, Kiki speaks to all young adults struggling to discover their talents and place in the world. Despite the fact that its protagonist is a witch, this coming of age story captures all the emotion of growing up. Every scene is a charming slice of life full of wonderful characters we can only wish were real.

#2: “Harry Potter” franchise (2001-11)

The “Harry Potter” movies, not to mention J. K. Rowling’s books, create a universe so detailed that it almost feels inhabitable. In some respects, the wizarding world of Harry Potter has become real, creating a diehard subculture in our society. But what truly made this franchise come to life are its characters, who all have such distinctive personalities and backstories that they jump right off of the screen. It’s an ageless story we can all lose ourselves in, proving that the line between magic and reality isn’t as thick as we assume.
