Like Diana did, we thought we said goodbye to Steve Trevor. But thanks to the Dreamstone, he returns in this followup to the 2017 film. Keep in mind that he did die in World War I, so waking up in 1984 is a bit of a shock. (Not to mention he’s inhabiting someone else’s body.) Just as Steve helped Diana learn about the “world of men,” she teaches him all about the 1980s. Steve’s boyish wonder at all of modern technology is endearing. But it’s also funny to watch his reactions, especially when it comes to the fashion. Chris Pine is comedy gold as he tries on numerous ‘80s-inspired outfits. Steve can really rock a fanny pack.
“Shazam!” is a superhero movie that likes to poke fun at the genre. One example is during Billy’s final fight against Dr. Sivana. The two square off in the sky (similar to Superman and Zod in “Man of Steel”). Like a true supervillain, Sivana has a grand speech about his evil plan, saying that he’s too powerful to defeat. But it doesn’t have much impact since he’s just a little too far away for Billy to actually hear what he’s saying. One of our favorite things about Billy is that he keeps it real, even in an epic showdown.
When the squad plans to enter Corto Maltese, they’re introduced to a local named Milton. He becomes the designated driver, agreeing to transport them around the city. All is well until it’s time to break into Jötunheim. Milton is wholly unprepared for this final mission. He doesn’t have any protective gear or a weapon. He really doesn’t even have to be here for this. And yet he bravely sticks with the squad, helping them set bombs around the massive laboratory. Sadly, Milton gets caught in the crossfire. Though he’s mourned by Abner, Bloodsport and Harley are unaware that Milton was even with them. Rest in peace, Milton. Gone, but not forgotten… for the most part.
To say Diana Prince draws a lot of attention is an understatement. Her Themyscira warrior garb doesn’t exactly fit World War I-era London, or really anywhere off the island. Though we love Diana’s Amazonian look, she must blend in amongst the mortals. Steve and his secretary Etta Candy take her shopping for period-appropriate clothing. Diana hilariously comments on the impracticality of women’s fashion, and the inability to fight while wearing constricting dresses. After a series of failed attempts, Diana settles on something comfortable. Steve throws on some glasses and she’s suddenly a modern woman. Well, not exactly. But that’s as close as they’re going to get.
After a long night of drinking and blowing up Ace Chemicals, Harley needs some food. We watch her nearly drool over the preparation of an egg sandwich. Sorry, the perfect egg sandwich. Unfortunately, she’s stopped by Detective Renee Montoya before she can even take a bite. Harley protects her breakfast as she flees from the detective. As soon as it seems like it’s over, she’s tackled, and the precious sandwich goes flying into the street. But she gets her revenge when she runs into Montoya again — not once but twice. In the end, Harley Quinn and her apprentice Cassandra Cain get to enjoy two delicious egg sandwiches. Now that’s a happy ending.
Harley, Cass, Huntress, Canary, and Montoya run into each other at various points in the movie. But near the end, all five “birds” finally join forces to take down infamous crime lord Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask. When Sionis brings an army of masked criminals to Amusement Mile, it’s time for the ladies to suit up. Despite facing death, this is all very exciting for Harley. She helps Montoya choose something to wear, suggests getting some food and drinks, and gives Huntress expert psychological advice. We’ve always wondered what a Harley Quinn sleepover would entail, and now we know — weapons, pizza, and cosmos.
Having grown up on Themyscira, an island devoid of men, Diana is naturally curious about Steve and his world. She asks why he won’t sleep next to her on the boat. This sparks a discussion on the concept of marriage and “the pleasures of the flesh.” This is just the beginning of Diana’s views on the societal norms in the “world of men.” Steve is surprised, and clearly uncomfortable, with Diana’s openness. And when he asks about her father, she tells him that she was sculpted from clay and brought to life by Zeus. Steve simply answers: [“Well, that’s neat.”] Steve’s awkwardness in response to Diana’s straightforward approach to the matter makes this one of the best scenes in the film.
Polka-Dot Man was a surprising fan favorite in this long-awaited James Gunn film. Abner Krill may not seem like much of a hero, but his heart is in the right place. This metahuman has the ability to expel polka-dot-shaped pustules from his body, causing major destruction. His mother intentionally exposed him and his siblings to an interdimensional virus, hoping to turn them into superheroes. After he tells the squad about his mother’s twisted experiments, we feel bad for the guy. Despite it stemming from childhood trauma, seeing Abner’s mom manifest everywhere is absurdly funny. He puts this to good use against Starro. It leads to his death, but he got his superhero moment!
After Billy Batson becomes Shazam, he turns to his new foster brother for help. Freddy is obsessed with comic books, so if anyone knows about superheroes, it’s definitely him. Not sure of what exactly he can do, Billy and Freddy go through a series of power tests. Hyper speed? Check. Super strength? Check. Flying? Not quite yet. But he puts the powers he does have to good use, like getting free soda and trying to get money from an ATM. This montage includes some of the most hilarious scenes in the film and in the DCEU.
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
As the squad prepares to infiltrate the city of Corto Maltese, Sol Soria gives them all a change of clothes. King Shark, aka Nanaue, is obviously the odd man (or shark) out. No disguise would make this giant humanoid come close to blending in with the locals. But in an effort to fit in, King Shark suggests he wear a fake mustache as a disguise. Naturally, his genius idea is immediately shot down. The hilarious scene culminates in King Shark stomping off in a fury, shouting a certain four-letter word.
#10: Steve Gets to Know the ‘80s
“Wonder Woman 1984” (2020)Like Diana did, we thought we said goodbye to Steve Trevor. But thanks to the Dreamstone, he returns in this followup to the 2017 film. Keep in mind that he did die in World War I, so waking up in 1984 is a bit of a shock. (Not to mention he’s inhabiting someone else’s body.) But it’s also funny to watch his reactions, especially when it comes to the fashion. Chris Pine is comedy gold as he tries on numerous ‘80s-inspired outfits. Steve can really rock a fanny pack.
#9: What? I Can’t Hear You
“Shazam!” (2019)“Shazam!” is a superhero movie that likes to poke fun at the genre.
#8: Who’s Milton?

#7: Dress Shopping
“Wonder Woman” (2017)To say Diana Prince draws a lot of attention is an understatement. Her Themyscira warrior garb doesn’t exactly fit World War I-era London, or really anywhere off the island. #6: Harley’s Egg Sandwich
“Birds of Prey” (2020)After a long night of drinking and blowing up Ace Chemicals, Harley needs some food.
