She’s the Queen of ITV. Welcome to WatchMojo UK, and today we're counting down our picks for the Top 10 Holly Willoughby Moments.
For this list, we'll be looking at Holly's most memorable moments, from kids’ TV beginnings to famous features on “This Morning”, to the complete carnage of “Celebrity Juice”.
#10: Holly's Unusual Laugh
“This Morning” (1988-)
Holly and her “This Morning” partner in crime Phillip Schofield are well known for their on-screen andoff-screen friendship. But their natural chemistry often results in the pair cracking up, loosing their cool and laughing themselves silly! And this moment is a case in point. The pair are already in hysterics, before Holly takes one laugh too many, makes a funny noise, and sets Phil off all over again. Scenes like this are all part of what makes the show so popular, with unscripted moments aplenty.
#9: Welly Wanging
“This Morning” (1988-)
Whenever Willoughby’s presenting there’s never a dull moment, even when Phil isn’t by her side. Ben Shephard fills in here, and promptly challenges Holly to a “Welly Wanging” contest, a peculiar sport with annual World Championships hosted in Upperthong, West Yorkshire! It’s a game that’s hard to say without sounding foolish, and it’s apparently quite difficult to play, too. Holly wangs her welly enthusiastically, but her throw promptly destroys the on-set décor - smashing a decorative pineapple for good measure.
#8: Holly & Fearne Go Bananas
“Celebrity Juice” (2008-)
Holly and real-life BFF Fearne Cotton are at the centre of this surreal show, routinely taking part in whatever risqué game Keith Lemon has dreamed up next. But this might just be their steamiest moment, taking on an assault course with but a banana between them. For another infamous “Celebrity Juice” episode, Willoughby rocked up drunk and dressed as Harley Quinn from “Suicide Squad”, but this bonkers game trumps even that. If you only knew Holly from her daytime tele hosting roles, you can raise your eyebrows right about now.
#7: Interviewing Tim Peake
“This Morning” (1988-)
Regular “This Morning” viewers will know that an on-air mishap is never too far away, and Holly makes a memorable error here. She and Phil are all set to interview British astronaut Tim Peake, live from the International Space Station. However, Holly mistakenly believes that they’re still in soundcheck, and so she can be seen casually on her phone – trying to film the moment for herself. When she realises that this is in fact the real deal, however, she styles it out by smiling, and sitting on the phone for the rest of the segment. Smooth Holly, real smooth.
#6: Make 'Em Laugh
“Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway” (2002-09; 2013-)
Holly and Phil and Ant & Dec go way back, with both pairs regularly collaborating for some frankly hilarious moments. But none more so than here, during the ‘Make ‘Em Laugh’ feature on “Saturday Night Takeaway”. It’s an unpredictable head-to-head challenge, as each pair does whatever they can to make the other – you guessed it – laugh. Schofield in stockings is pretty hard to forget, but Holly brings her A-game too – posing as a beautician, a UK geographer and an erotic artist. You’ll never look at Phil in the same way again.
#5: Meeting Mrs. Brown
“All Round to Mrs. Brown's” (2017-)
As two of tele’s biggest audience draws, “This Morning” and “Mrs Brown's Boys” attract their fair share of fans. So, when the shows crossed over for “All Round to Mrs Brown's” in 2017, it was sure to go down well. Holly’s again paired with Phil – the two are pretty inseparable, really – for an episode which also features Lulu, The Kaiser Chiefs and Ian Beale from “EastEnders”. But Holly’s performance earned particular praise, as she expertly navigates each and every innuendo that the Brendan O’Carroll character can throw her way.
#4: Getting Gunged
“Holly & Stephen's Saturday Showdown” [aka “Ministry of Mayhem”] (2004-06)
Let's dial back the years, and pay a visit to the “Ministry of Mayhem”, the kids’ TV classic hosted by Holly and Stephen Mulhern at the beginning of both their TV careers. Just check out those early-noughties highlights! And while some parts of this show have since been forgotten, the epic gungings definitely haven’t. A source of endless laughter for the show’s intended audience, these clips have since found their home on YouTube – and are go-to examples of where Holly’s ‘Willoughbooby’ nickname might just have come from…
#3: Holly’s Cake
“This Morning” (1988-)
“This Morning” after the NTAs is always worth a watch whenever Holly and Phil have won anything. The clips of them presenting while still drunk, severely hungover or generally exhausted from the partying of the previous night are internet sensations in their own right. But our favourite post-party moment came in 2016, as the Loose Women bring surprise cake to the set. While Phil admirably continues with a feature on fish and chips, Holly sticks her spoon right in the centre, for a hangover cure we can all get on board with.
#2: Holly Gets Pranked
“Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway” (2002-09; 2013-)
Ant & Dec have duped many an unsuspecting celebrity in their time, but this joke at Holly’s expense is surely one of the best. Enlisting the help of a team of actors and the boyband Blue, the Geordie duo gate-crash Holly’s show “Surprise, Surprise”. But the surprise is really on her, as she’s pulled into an elaborate story about a charity worker, her boyfriend and a scandalous marriage proposal. As all kinds of chaos seemingly unfolds around her, Holly’s reaction is priceless – until the truth is finally revealed.
#1: Holly Vs. Katie Hopkins
“This Morning” (1988-)
Of all Holly’s “This Morning” moments, this will definitely not be forgotten in a hurry. When controversial TV personality and columnist Katie Hopkins drops by for a debate, she reveals that she judges children based on their names, making assumptions about their social class, behaviour and whether or not she’d allow her kids to play with them. But here’s where Holly steps in, shutting down Katie’s rant by speaking some actual sense. It’s an interview that established Hopkins as one of Britain’s most hated celebs, but it also proved that Holly is one of the UK’s most loved. Willoughby for the win.
