For this list we're looking at the cheat codes and unlockable modes that made us laugh, and are basing our choices on a mix of creativity, humour and just how much unexpected fun they brought to their game.

#10: One Hit Cars - "The Simpsons: Hit & Run" (2003)

Turning Springfield into a warzone, this cheat transforms cars into explosives on wheels. Effectively transforming players into driving detonators, the cheat blows up every car you touch on impact, allowing players to effectively break the game in the most destructive and hilarious way imaginable. To enable the carnage, just hold L1 and R1 in the main menu and then press triangle, triangle, square, square, or Y, Y, X, X – if you hear a car horn, you did it right! As if you weren’t a liability on the road already.

#9: Dog Mode - "Rise Of The Triad" (1994)

Parodying the classic God Mode, this shooter's Dog Mode makes you a four-legged killing machine. Normally you can grab the bone capsule to turn into a dog for about 30 seconds, but you can unlock it indefinitely by typing “woof” into the command console. When biting and pawing away at cult members isn't funny anymore, you even have a BarkBlast that vaporizes enemies right before your eyes. Despite the hilarity, the dog is actually one of the strongest characters in the game! Thinking outside the box, the designers made comedic gold out of simple wordplay. Designed after the producer's dog Loki, this murderous pooch is deceptively cute.

#8: Tofu - "Resident Evil 2" (1998)

Originally created to test collision detection in the game, Capcom decided to make Tofu a playable character. Armed with nothing but a knife, Tofu makes his way through HUNK's special mode while speaking the same dialogue lines, though Tofu swears in Japanese when he's attacked. Taking more damage than other characters, he even switches from white to blood red as he's injured. Keeping the laughs coming, Tofu's victory screen even shows a soldier taking a bite out of him. It’s this mode that made Tofu a series favourite, as he has also made appearances in later Resident Evil titles.

#7: Butt Mode - "Shovel Knight" (2014)

Using the Mad Libs approach, this 2D adventure replaced their important nouns with the word "butts." Swapping out their most used words, Yacht Club Games pulled a surprising amount of mileage out this childish joke. Changing "shovel," "knight," "magic" and "health" among other words, every conversation turns into an instant absurd comedy. Naming yourself X&BUTT in the menu activates the cheat, so you can quest for butt justice. Trying to upgrade your knight will even have characters asking to extend your butt. Though activating it will disable achievements, naming your hero Butt Butt more than makes up for it.

#6: Disco Mode - "Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal" (1996)

To hear one of this real-time strategy game's hottest tracks, all you have to do is hit enter and type disco. Following Blizzard's similar songs in games like StarCraft, this groovy jam even has lyrics hilariously mocking the competition. A parody of "Mechanical Man" from the Command & Conquer series, the song "I'm A Medieval Man" uses both original lyrics and remixes of unit’s voice lines to fill out the track. Appearing on the "Beyond The Dark Portal Expansion," you could even listen to it on a CD player with all its twisted voices, and that ridiculous guitar solo.

#5: DK Mode - "GoldenEye 007" (1997)

Dramatically inflating enemies, DK mode turned this James Bond outing into a slapstick comedy. While cheats like tiny mode and paintball offered different looks to the game, DK mode offered a complete tonal shift by giving everyone giant heads and tiny bodies, long arms and hilariously oversized weapons. Named after Donkey Kong himself, and a reference to Rare’s previous work on the Donkey Kong Country series, this is one of the easiest cheats you can unlock in the game as all you have to do is beat the Runway level in under five minutes.

#4: Turkey Assassin - "Assassin's Creed III" (2012)

To lighten up the heavy story in this Ubisoft title, you can summon a turkey to your cause. After sequence six, return to the Davenport Homestead and whistle by the back porch. After being greeted by a sneaky turkey, input the Konami Code which is: up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A. Your feathered friend should now have an assassin's hood, and will follow you around the map. While he doesn't actually fight, his devoted companionship is a hysterical touch.

#3: Washing Machine - “Banjo-Kazooie” (1998)

Ever wondered what it would be like to go on an adventure as a household appliance? No? Well why not experience it anyway? In Banjo’s house you can find a hidden set of puzzle minigames that will each reward you with cheats that can leave the Bird & Bear hilariously deformed. However the best reward comes with the final minigame where you’re given the password “WishyWashyBanjo” to enter on the password floor located in Treasure Trove Cove. Upon entering that code you’ll be errm … rewarded by being transformed into a Washing Machine because … why not?

#2: Exploding Lara Croft - "Tomb Raider II" (1997)

Given the massive controversy around the supposed "Nude Code" in the first instalments, fans were clamouring for such a feature to appear in Lara's follow-up. With a hefty sense of humour, publisher Core Design allegedly posted the code online for fans that involves going one step forward, one step backward, turning around three times and then jumping forward or backwards. However instead of Lara stripping into her birthday suit, she’s torn apart in a shocking explosion that sends her limbs flying every which way. Well Played Core Design. Well Played.

#1: Human Gun Sounds - "TimeSplitters: Future Perfect" (2005)

Letting the players and designers run wild, cheats in this shooter ranged from rotating heads to 8-bit graphics. Taking things off the rails, one cheat replaced every gun sound with someone imitating gun sounds. It’s hilarious, childish, and kind of endearing in a weird way. Only requiring a bronze on the "Cat's Out Of The Bag" challenge, the cheat was a cakewalk to unlock, though it’s only available in arcade mode. Still, it's easy to imagine the mayhem the story would've been with the addition of these screams.
