Welcome to MsMojo and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Movie Moments that Made Us Love Chris Hemsworth.
For this list, we’ll be looking at those perfect moments in a Hemsworth film, like arriving in style in Wakanda, that make him Hollywood’s number one Chris. No disrespect to Pratt, Evans and Pine, of course.
Don’t forget to pop down to the comments and let us know about the movie moment that made you love Chris Hemsworth.
#10: Mourning the Dead
“Snow White and the Huntsman” (2012)
This reimagining of Snow White’s classic fairy tale took the fight against Charlize Theron’s Queen Ravenna in a much more aggressive direction. Chris Hemsworth played The Huntsman, who is duped by the Queen into capturing Snow White. He turns against the Queen when he finds out she can’t bring back his late wife, Sara. Their relationship is explored more deeply in “The Huntsman: Winter’s War.” However, the most poignant scene in the Rupert Sanders-directed movie was The Huntsman mourning Snow White when he believed she was dead. Hemsworth perfectly nailed his portrayal of the drunken widower feeling real emotion for the first time in a long time here.
#9: Be Careful Who, or What, You Wake Up Next To
“Men in Black: International” (2019)
The “Men in Black” franchise got off to a solid start thanks to the dynamic duo of Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson reunited after their “Thor: Ragnarok” success to keep the magic going in “Men in Black: International.” It didn’t quite live up to the original, but the 2019 sci-fi action flick still had some great comedic moments. Chris Hemsworth waking up next to an anonymous alien after an apparent intergalactic one-night stand was surprising, to say the least. It just goes to show that the man has appeal well beyond our solar system.
#8: Putting His Life on the Line
“Extraction” (2020)
In “Extraction,” Hemsworth played Tyler Rake, an ex-Australian army operator-turned mercenary who also appears to specialize in retrieving kidnap victims. One might say he had his own very particular set of skills. Rake was hired to retrieve the kidnapped son of a drug lord who was in prison. Naturally, nothing went to plan and Rake was left out in the cold, trying to keep this kid alive. The final moments of Rake’s battle were some of the best in the movie. As a final act of heroism in a long, morally ambiguous life, he sacrifices himself to protect the boy. It’s a moment that’s beautiful and heart-wrenching at the same time.
#7: Giving His Life for His Son
“Star Trek” (2009)
The 2009 “Star Trek” movie caught fans off guard by rewriting the timeline that they had been used to for the past few decades. It also gave them new actors portraying the classic characters from the original series. In an early role, Chris Hemsworth played a small part in the film as George Kirk, the father of James T. Kirk. George sacrifices himself to protect his wife and son while he is being delivered. As George takes command of the starship they were on, he and his wife barely have the time to name their newly born son while he fights time-travelling Romulans. This sacrifice was a prime example of the heroic roles Hemsworth would play throughout his career.
#6: Hemsworth Takes Peacocking to a New Level
“Vacation” (2015)
The “Vacation” movie franchise started 1983 when Clark Griswold tried to take his family on a trip to Walley World. It didn’t go well. 32 years later, his son Rusty attempted the same trip with his family. Somehow, it went even worse. Like the first film, 2015’s “Vacation” was filled with missteps that drove the trip off course. The biggest obstacle though was family, especially Rusty’s brother-in-law, Stone Crandall. A stop in Texas leads to Stone really showing off for Rusty’s wife, Debbie. Watching Hemsworth pose in his underwear while casually displaying the goods surely left as indelible an impression on his fellow actors - as it did film viewers. Wow.
#5: Chris Gets His Groove On
“Bad Times at the El Royale” (2018)
Even when Chris Hemsworth is bad, he’s still good. In “Bad Times at the El Royale”, a group of strangers found themselves at the same hotel in the 1960s. And every last one of them was hiding something. One thing Hemsworth couldn’t hide was his sweet, sweet dance moves. Chris played Billy Lee, a ruthless and magnetic cult leader who wants to bring one of his followers back. When he shows up at the hotel, things get violent, but he also takes a moment to dance and eat to Deep Purple’s “Hush.” Hemsworth’s hypnotic swaying of his well-defined abs is the perfect setup for the bad times that are about to follow; Billy Lee is not a nice guy.
#4: Riding a Motorbike into a Force Field Is a Bad Idea
“The Cabin in the Woods” (2011)
You’d think after all those movies about Ash Williams going into the woods, a group of young adults wouldn’t try and do the same. Yet in “The Cabin in the Woods,” that’s exactly what happened. Only this time, the young adults had Chris Hemsworth with them. As things get dire and more members of the group die, Hemsworth’s Curt stepps up. He gave a stirring speech meant to instill confidence in his friends. And if there’s one thing Hemsworth knows how to do, it’s give an incredibly inspirational talk. It was a truly glorious moment that he unfortunately follows up by jumping his motorcycle over a chasm and into a... force field. Okay, he obviously didn’t know it was there, but it certainly made his demise all the more memorable.
#3: Job Interviews Are So Awkward
“Ghostbusters” (2016)
Few people enjoy job interviews. They can be incredibly difficult experiences, and especially so if the interviewee is barely aware that they’re in a job interview. That seemed like the case for Kevin Beckman in the 2016 version of “Ghostbusters.” His main qualification to be the team’s receptionist was how hot he was. That was definitely enough for Kristen Wiig’s character. And probably for the majority of the audience. We’d be remiss not to mention that what Kevin lacks in administrative skills, he more than makes up for in dance ability. (xref) Alright, so those sweet moves came from his being possessed by the film’s villain Rowan, and not Kevin himself, but that doesn’t take away from Hemsworth’s skills as a performer!
#2: Online Gaming in New Asgard
“Avengers: Endgame” (2019)
After failing to defeat Thanos, Thor took a couple of odd turns. Over the next five years, he helped to establish New Asgard. He also put on an incredible amount of weight and started yelling at online gamers. All the beer he drank played a big part in those life choices. Korg and Miek weren’t exactly great influences on the situation, either. “The Big Lebowski” version of Thor was incredibly unexpected and a comedy highlight of “Endgame” - though Star-Lord might not agree. But this specific scene also had a bit of a dark side. It also showed how far Thor had fallen since his failure in Wakanda, and how deeply that moment impacted him.
#1: A Friend from Work!
“Thor: Ragnarok” (2017)
“Thor: Ragnarok” was an absolute game changer for the Asgardian Avenger. He became more relatable than any previous depiction of the character in the MCU. Plus, this Thor was hilarious. “Ragnarok” was filled with brilliantly funny gags, many of which were thanks to this much less serious version of the Thunder God. But the moment Hulk busted into The Grandmaster’s gladiatorial arena absolutely took the cake. Thor excitedly greeted his old friend, only to get pummeled by him. That being said, Thor was pretty keyed up in this scene. Maybe he finally needs to lay off the caffeine.
