Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 “One Piece” moments that gave you chills.
For this list, we’ll be looking at scenes from “One Piece” so epic that they send shivers down your spines (and ours!) Naturally, since most of these are plot important moments, there will be spoilers ahead!
If there’s a legendary “One Piece” moment that gives you the feels, tell us your picks in the comments!
The Straw Hats often get involved in local politics, and a coup at Fishman Island sees them come into conflict with the New Fishman Pirates. The odds are stacked against them, with 100 thousand pirates facing the 10 Straw Hats (well, 9 plus 1 future recruit). The enemy leader declares how hopeless it is, even declaring his desire to become King of the Pirates, as well as of Fishman Island. However, he doesn’t realize who he’s messing with! Luffy strolls up through the attacking Fishmen pirates and unleashes a blast of Conqueror’s Haki so powerful that half of the attacking army falls unconscious! Luffy’s right - there’s only room for one Pirate King. The “visual aid” for his argument is so compelling, we get goosebumps!
Monkey D. Luffy’s fights with Crocodile are all fantastic, but his final clash with the Warlord during another civil war is the one that makes our list. The climax of an underground duel between the duo, Luffy inflates himself and sends himself rocketing up towards Crocodile to unleash a storm of fists on him. And as the classical piece “New World Symphony” plays, Luffy punches his sandy foe through bedrock, uprooting buildings and bringing down the hooked crook of a Croc at last! It’s the culmination of the first major saga of the Grand Line and it’s executed in a phenomenally epic style, with the punches set in time with the music! You know what they say - “D. always brings a storm!”
When Nami’s years of slaving away to save her village is undone, and the villagers are ready to fight the Arlong Pirates on her behalf, she breaks down in despair, tearing at the tattoo on her arm. Luffy stops her, and Nami finally, tearfully asks for his help. Not only does Luffy reply immediately, but he also gives her his precious straw hat, his most treasured possession. Then, with Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp, Luffy marches on Arlong Park in an epic moment that wasn’t even in the manga, as the awesome OST heralds their arrival.
Luffy’s entire fight with Rob Lucci is incredible, but its conclusion still gives us chills! Luffy has promised Usopp that he won’t fall until Lucci is defeated. This promise proves difficult to keep after Lucci delivers a devastating Rokuōgan on him. However, Luffy refuses to go down. Keeping his feet, Luffy turns and starts punching so fast that his fists disappear! And as he recalls all the moments throughout the arc that have led to this one, he unleashes his Jet Gatling on Lucci and delivers a primal scream! While he’s always serious in a fight (even when he’s ridiculous), Luffy gives everything to this attack and the emotions wrapped up in this moment still send shivers through our everything!
The late Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, has a mystique about him that makes each scene with him something special. But they all pale in comparison to the moment we finally see he and his crew arrive at the last island of the Grand Line. As an enchanting song plays, we learn that when Roger learned the world’s true history and all its secrets, and saw the One Piece - he laughed. He and his men all laughed. We may not be in on the joke yet, but the moment of discovery, and Roger’s decision to name the island “Laugh Tale,” still brings us indescribable joy. If the moment Luffy finally arrives there is even half this amazing, we’re going to laugh/cry all over again!
Let’s turn from one legendary pirate to another! Edward “Whitebeard” Newgate gives us chills nearly every time he’s onscreen. But his final moments in life are on another level! Attacked by Blackbeard and his crew, Whitebeard is dying of his wounds, yet still delivers an epic speech. He declares that Blackbeard won’t be the one to succeed Roger and that Roger’s treasure does indeed exist. Its discovery will turn the world on its head! And as if launching a new age of piracy with his final words wasn’t enough, Whitebeard follows it up by dying on his feet like the legend that he was! Whitebeard’s treasure was his family, but it’s moments like these that “One Piece” fans treasure.
Sometimes a twist is so epic, it gives you goosebumps! For most of their time on Zou, the island on a giant elephant’s back populated by animal people called minks, the Straw Hats are convinced that they should keep their samurai friends on the down low. After all, the Beasts Pirates have ravaged their dukedom, tortured them, and nearly poisoned them all with chemical weapons in search of a ninja named Raizo. But, when Kin’emon asks where Raizo is, the minks don’t react negatively. Instead, they bow and confirm their friend is safe! The sheer level of friendship and devotion it takes to endure what they have for Raizo’s sake - it’s jaw dropping!
In the Straw Hats’ greatest hour of need, they turn to their most trusted friend. Cornered by Navy ships at Enies Lobby and with nowhere to run, Usopp hears a voice. Insisting that they trust him, he urges them all to jump into the sea. Robin even uses her powers to save Luffy, repaying him for saving her. And as the Straw Hats fall and the music swells to triumphant, emotional heights (it’s called “Sign of Friendship,” thank us later) we realize that their brave little ship, the Going Merry has come to save them! Even as damaged as she is, Merry gave it her all to rescue her crew and have one last adventure. BRB - just gonna’ have a cry about a boat…
When the warlord Bartholomew Kuma has most of the crew knocked out, Zoro offers up his own head when Kuma threatens to take Luffy’s. While Sanji offers too, Zoro insists. Kuma agrees, but he makes it so that Zoro must take on all the damage and exhaustion Luffy has already accumulated, in addition to his own. Just a small sliver of this pain bubble is enough to make Zoro convulse. To make sure they don’t see his dead body when they wake, Zoro relocates and immerses himself in the bubble. The crew wakes up and Sanji finds Zoro covered in blood - but still standing! Not wanting to make Luffy feel guilty, Zoro claims that “nothing happened.” Never has a non-event been so incredible!
The Straw Hats’ rescue of Robin at Enies Lobby is packed with great moments, including several on our list. But this moment tops them all! Confronting CP9 and Robin atop 2 towers, Robin initially refuses to accept their help, as her enemy is the world, and she believes her death can save her friends. But then, Luffy has Usopp, uh, Sogeking show her how much she means to them - by burning the World Government’s flag! They’re willing to take on the entire world to get her back! But Robin has to want to be saved. And after being told she shouldn’t be alive her whole life, Robin admits she wants to live. It’s badass, it’s epic, it’s heartwarming - it gives us feels worth living for.
