Top 10 Reasons People Love PC Gaming

Gaming is serious business. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be counting down the Top 10 Reasons People Love PC Gaming.

For this list, we’re counting down everything that makes the PC superior to console and mobile platforms. There are things a PC can do that are simply unmatched.

#10: What Console Wars?

Tired of the eternal struggle between the three major consoles? Then PC gaming is for you. If it’s a PC game then it can be played on any computer that meets its system requirements. World of Warcraft isn’t exclusive to Alienware. Dota 2 isn’t exclusive to Lenovo. If you have a PC you can run games from EA’s Origin, Valve’s Steam, or Blizzard’s Battle.net, you don’t have to choose. You can have it all.

#9: Games that can’t be Played Elsewhere

While shooters, platformers, and RPG’s are staples of PC gaming, you can also play genres that just aren’t available on consoles. Traditional MOBAs like League of Legends and Dota 2 aren’t available outside of PCs because they require sophisticated mouse and keyboard controls that would overwhelm a gamepad. Massive real time strategy games like the Total War series would eat a console’s CPU power and ask for seconds. And tycoon games are just too intricate for anything other than a PC.

#8: Easy to Diagnose Problems

Know how to Google? Then you’re already on your way to knowing how to troubleshoot your PC’s technical problems. There is a deep knowledge base out there when it comes to fixing some of PC’s most common problems and there are also tons of resources for fixing the less common ones. And, once you’ve figured out your problem, you can open up your rig, switch out the ram, clean the CPU fan, or do whatever is required to fix the problem yourself. Console makes often want you to send their broken boxes back to them, charging high repair and shipping costs.

#7: Unlimited Backwards Compatibility

Worried that if you buy a new PC you won’t be able to play last year’s great games? Of course not, that would be silly. In PC gaming, there’s no need to worry about backwards compatibility. Want to play Dawn of War 1 in preparation for Dawn of War 3? No problem, just load up Steam and play away. Feel like playing the original Call of Duty? You can do it. In fact, if there is a game out there that is too old to run on modern hardware, there’s a good chance there’s an emulator or patch to fix that .

#6: Mouse and Keyboard are More Precise

Ever feel like you’re a god of death while playing the latest shooter on console only to not be able to hit the side of a building while playing the same game on PC? That’s because console shooters often have built-in aim assist. This is necessary because of how highly imprecise analogue sticks are. Mouse and Keyboard, on the other hand, don’t need aim assist because they are already extremely accurate. Where you point your mouse and fire is where you hit. This can be jarring for those not used to it, but it is a significant advantage for those who are.

#5: Free Multiplayer

The price of new games is steep enough, but consoles often add payed online services on top too. That’s not something you have to worry about with PC gaming. Want to play a Steam game with friends? No problem, load up the game and have fun. Does your favorite PC strategy game require a paid service to play against your friends? Nope. It boggles our minds that console makers are getting away with double dipping like this. Granted there are some online games, mostly MMORPG’s that do require players to sign up for a dedicated subscription service, but in recent years, that model has been slowly dying out in favor of a F2P setup.

#4: Cheaper Games

Ever notice that your PC game-playing friends get unusually happy or excited around a specific time during the summer? That’s a medical condition called Steam Summer Sales. There’s also a similar condition called Steam Winter Sales. So, not only are many PC games reasonably priced, but there are often tons of sales. Every Ea’s Origins (ew) has sales! I’m sure Uplay has them too but that’s extra gross so we haven’t checked. The point is, cheap game! WOO!

#3: Mods

Do you prefer your Dovahkiin to fight Thomas the Tank Engine instead of Dragons? Would you rather play a custom Star Craft 2 game mode than what the developers originally offered? Want your Roman soldiers to fight Lannisters instead of Carthaginians? Until recently, the only way to do anything remotely close to this was to be playing on a PC. Bethesda has started to allow mods for their games on console, but that’s about it. It’s truly amazing what you can do by simply modifying some text files.

#2: Graphical Power

While new consoles are still coming out with 720p graphics, we’re looking at you Nintendo Switch, PCs have been pushing graphical limits passed 1080 and 1440p up to 4k and beyond. The amount of power in modern day GPU’s is staggering and you can even double up your cards for nearly twice the performance. You can’t really duct tape two PS4’s together and get 60 frames per second. You haven’t gamed until you’ve gamed at ultra-high resolutions and frame rates.

#1: Customizability

Like your PC decked out in a fancy case with RGB lights? Prefer a modest look with big power under the hood? Want a dream machine that fits in your backpack? Or a gaming computer tall enough to get through most rides at Disneyland? You can do it with PC gaming. There is a dizzying amount of options when it comes gaming on computers and that’s the way we like it. What’s even better is that all that custom hardware is upgradable. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of building your own gaming rig to your own specifications.
